According to sparse family records, Hans S. Weik, born 25 October 1811 and his wife, Kari (Carrie) ?, born 14 October 1814, together with their children emigrated to Fillmore County, Minnesota in 1870. Only the names of two of their seven children are known. They are Mathea Hansdatter, born 5 November 1847 and George Hansen Weik, born 12 August 1856. There were also five other brothers, names unknown. The only reference to a Norway location is in connection with Mathea's baptism record which states that she was baptized in Stange, Hedmark. After living in Fillmore county, Minnesota for two years, this family traveled northwest by prairie wagon to Trondhjem township, Ottertail county, Minnesota in 1872, All four of these immigrants are buried in the South Immanuel Lutheran Church cemetery, rural Rothsay, Minnesota. Their American surname, spelled Weik, very likely was Americanized after their arrival in the U.S. This family has many descendants in America.

Thanks, Hans Myhre, that's the right family! The family moved north to Erhard Grove township in Otter Tail county in 1872 after a stay of two years in Fillmore county, located in southeastern Minnesota. They later left Erhard Grove and moved into Trondhjem township, just a few miles west. I think your information also gives a good clue as to why this family selected the surname Weik in America. I notice that Hans Simensen was born on Wigseie or a sub-farm of the Wig farm. It is a short step from Wig to Weik. George and his first wife, Anna, had four children. She died on 7 February 1887. George remarried in 1891, to Mathea Trosvik. They had five children. George died on 5 January 1913. Tusen takk for opplysninger.
