Gjest Jan Peter Wiborg

To find out the Douglas county information (Brandon, MN) the email for the historical society there is historic@rea-alp.comI wonder if this might be the John Olson family? The historical society in Douglas County put together a history book in about 1980, and I found this about John A. Olson from Brandon.' . . . John A. Olson was born in Skogn Norway in 1838. At the age of 27 in 1865 he immigrated to the United States and came to Minneapolis where he found employment with a lumber company for a number of years . . . He married Sophie, b. 1847, daughter of Halvor and Siselie Tomte from Nordre Lands prestegjeld, Norway. She came to America in 1869 arriving in Decorah, Iowa. They married in 1871. In 1875 they moved to Douglas County about 1 1/2 miles south of Brandon. That information was on p. 186 of the Douglas County Album of the Ages, under the Bergh and Olson families' historyThe history was written by John Olson's granddaughter Lila Olson, and she says her brother Harvey Olson owned the farm in Brandon (at least he did in 1980 when the book was written.)Here is the family in 1880Lenke16211 John A Olson m 41 f N N N 428 Chippewa Douglas Minnesota 16212 Sophia Olson f 31 N N N 428 Chippewa Douglas Minnesota 16213 Henry O Olson m 5 Mn N N 428 Chippewa Douglas Minnesota 16214 Jensena S Olson f 4 Mn N N 428 Chippewa Douglas Minnesota 16215 Ludwick M Olson m 2 Mn N N 428 Chippewa Douglas Minnesota good luck with Douglas county, they have great records there at the historical society, Taryn

Thank you so much for that information, Taryn! But this is quite a mystery! I can not understand how Ingvald got an uncle called John Olsen... :-) The one you mention is from the same hometown (Skogn), but I've never heard of him. (I'm from the same town myself, and I thought I knew all about this family...)Ingvalds parents was not married, and his mother (Nicoline Marie Nilsdtr) left him at the age of 1. She emmigrated to Kasson, Dodge county in 1888, the same place her sister Jensine Rebekka settled a year earlier. His father was one 'Fredrik Isaksen' from Steinkjer, but I have no info that he had any relations to him or his family. Thus Ingvald was raised by his grandparents (Nicoline Marie's parents).I wonder if someone could look up the churchbooks for Skogn (Alstadhaug church) in 1838, and locate the parents for John A. Olsen...? The LDS looks to cover up to 1836... :-( LenkeBtw, Karyn: Do you have access to the 1890/1900/1910 US census for Dodge or Douglas county? I'm curious about these two persons: (Nicoline) Marie Nilsdatter born 1863, emmigrated 1888, and (Jensine) Rebekka Christiansdatter, born 1867, emmigrated 1887. They might have changed last name due to marriage, but I have no info about these two girls after they left the Trondheim harbour... They where both headed for Kasson, Dodge county.Jan

Nina.

Hei Nina, jo, jeg holder alle muligheter åpne her. Jan

I don't have access to the Douglas County censuses, but they have them at the historical society there (historic@rea-alp.com)You are right in thinking that John might not be his real uncle, maybe he's related to the grandparents who raised him? Later in the emigration, they limited who could come into the USA, and it's possible that he had to say he was going to his uncle, also, they couldn't come into the USA later on unless they had a guarantee of a job, probably as a farm worker. Maybe there are still descendants of John A. (what do you think the A. stands for?) Olson living on the farm? They do have a family file for this family at the historical society, that might also have his obituary and other information, possibly his naturalization papers or information that tells more about where he came from. Also they could get the death certificate for John, which might tell the names of his parents?I'm sorry I don't have any more information, but I hope that I have pointed you in a good direction, and not on a wild goose chase. Taryn

Hei! 1910 Dodge COunty, Canisteo twp. May 2. 1910Ingvald Wiborg, 23 år, g. m Kitiane 25 år, ingen barn. Begge f. i Norge. begge imm. i 1907. Han jobbet på 'dairy farm'. ------------Pussig i grunnen... I 1900 bor familien John A. Olson og fruen Sophie i samme Brandon,John Olson, f. Feb(?) 1839/39 (vondt å lese), f. Norge, imm. 1865. Farmer frua, Sophie er f. 1848, Oktober, f. 6 barn 3 i live. f. i Norge, imm. 1869Barna: f. i Minnesota Henry O. f. sept. 1874 Mandy, f. Feb. 1882 Jennie f. Jan. 1880. Laila

Hei, takk for flott arbeide, Laila! (And to you, Taryn! You have pointed me in a very good direction regarding this John A. Olsen...)Jeg syntes faktisk at denne John A. Olson var litt for gammel, men siden du ikke finner andre i Brandon så må det vel nesten være han...Jeg må bare finne hans foreldre!

Henry Olson was John Olson's son and married a Jennie Bergh in 1899. After a brief time in North Dakota, Henry came back to Brandon and bought the John Olson farm in 1912, so I suppose John was dead by then? Henry had five boys and two girls, one included Lila Olson who wrote the article for the Douglas county Album of the ages. A son of Henry stayed on the farm, his name was Harvey Olson. Son Elroy Olson ended up on Marysville Washington, Clarence was in California, and Glenn Olson stayed in Douglas county, farming in the next town of Evansville. Here is the death information for Glenn, and I wonder if the Douglas county historical society would have an obituary for him, which would name his kids. Try asking them at historic@rea-alp.comOLSON, GLENN A. I think the name of the Norwegian church in the town of Brandon is called Grace Lutheran. But there were also two Lutheran Churches out in the country that might be a church that farmers in that area would go to. Hi,thank you so much for your reasearch, Taryn. I should try to get in touch with Lila Olson regarding this... I have been in touch with Ingvalds descendants (great-grandchilds) a year ago, but not regarding this. Many of them live in the Minneapolis area.In topic 17640, we found one 'Johan Andreas Olsen', born in Skogn on Feb. 08, 1839, christened March 31st. Parents was Ole Andersen Hoem and Jonette Johansdatter. It could be them living on the farm Ensomhet in 1865-census. Lenke That farm is one of the closest to the farm Ingvald grew up!Jan
