2 x grandfather Nils Magnus Svanberg was a ship's captain among them a Danish ship 'Ora & Labora' and 'Enigiden' owner: Ole M. Christiansen. Searching for names of any other ships & dates he served. He was born in Bergen 1825, but lived most of his life in Økland, Sveio, Hordaland near Haugesund. Made trans-Atlantic voyages 1860-1900. died April 4,1904. His widow Henrikke Jørgensen Svanberg d. May 8, 1922 Bergen.

Nils Magnus Svanberg is registered as # 5935 in the Enlistment roll of Bergen, as # 5687 in the Main roll, and later he was registered as # 2725 in Haugesund.He started on 'Stord' in 1885, sailed with 'Vitingstad' 1886-1887, with 'Betty' and 'Lyna' in 1888, a trip to Iceland with 'Reykjavik' in 1889, with 'Marie' in 1890-1891, on 'Fear not' in 1891, with 'Daphnia' in 1892, with 'Desideria' and 'Springer' in 1893, and with 'Vibrand' 1893-1895, before being transferred to the Haugesund enlistment roll.

In 'How to trace your ancestors in Norway', found at http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/sab/howto.html you will see that 'Lists of seamen (annotasjonsruller or hovedruller), including information about emigrating 'deserters,' are found in the archives of the enlistment officers (innrulleringssjefen), which are now kept in the regional archives. Of course, these runaway seamen are not registered in the emigration lists.'
