Do you have any records of young men deserting ships in foreign ports? My Great Grandfather Oskar/Oscar came to Australia to live and was a Fireman or Steveador, probobly worked on ships. He was born in Moss in 1874 and arrived in Australia about 1891 (in Melbourne). His parents were Oluf Albrekt and Olava Jorgine Gulbrandsdatter of Moss, Ostfold parish. Was he working on the ships and jumped ship in Melbourne, does your Archives have records of this?

Many Norwegians did jump their ships, around 20 000 between 1870 and 1900. Their names are recorded in the books kept by the Enlistment Officer (Innrulleringssjefen/Mønstringssjefen), and these records are no found in the Regional State Archives.Moss is a town in Østfold, and if Oskar V. Jakobsen deserted his ship, the books in question from Moss will be found at Statsarkivet i Oslo, http://www.arkivverket.no/oslo/om.html
