Good evening! Do anyone know something about the Hindahl-(or Hindal-) family in Norway in the 17th century? I am looking for the ancestors of Johann Dietrich Hindahl, born 1727 in Schwarme, southwards of Bremen, Germany, he died 3.1.1807 at the same place. His ancestors perhaps came from Norway. I would be very thankful for any information or tip about this topic. Regards Frank Hildebrand

I can see that Hindal is a farmname in Tønset, Hedmark. There's also a Hindal in Hetland, Rogaland.

I actually live a few km away from Hindal in Stavanger !The surname Hindal or variant Hindahl is rare in Norway today. As of 1 jan 2008 there were 49 people with surname Hindal and 50 people with surname Hindahl

Hello Frank. Stavanger has a long history as a seaport and contact seaways over North Sea were often very frequent. If ancestors of Johann Dietrich Hindahl came from Norway the chances are very high they came from Stavanger area. Tynset (then spelled Tønset) is located in north of Hedmark - in the inland of Eastern NorwayHetland mentioned in posting (2) is a former kommune (municipality, Gemeinde) which merged with Stavanger in 1965Hindal is situated in former Hetland kommune, now a part of Stavanger kommuneSee some photos of Hindal here http://www.hindal.no/venner/index.htmlCelvin

Hello Celvin, many thanks for the big surprise you brought to me with the Hindal-homepage! I have already looked there a few minutes ago - very interesting! I´ll try to understand the text - unfortunately I don´t speak Norwegian, but have learned the low German dialect from my grandfather Hindahl, and there are some similarities with Norwegian, as I think. So it all remains exciting... Many regards Frank
