I am trying to locate the birth record of my father-in-law who I have as born in Oslo in 1905. I have not been able to locate his birth record but his confirmation record states that he was born in 'Krania'. Is this an abbreviated form for Kristiania? If so what parish records would I look in as there are so many for Oslo? Thanks, moira bue

Yes, I think Krania meens Kristiania = Oslo.I think you have to search in most of the churches in Oslo. As far as I know, Krania/ Kristiania does not just mean one exact church. You could of course start with the Domkirken....

I have been browsing and I do think that Krania is a specific church as other entries have birthplaces such as 'trefoldighet' and 'Paulus'. It would be nice to know what records have yet to be scanned for Oslo or are they complete? Are any records missing? Where do I find this out, moira

I can tell you for sure there is no church in Oslo called Krania, not anywhere in Norway. Here are all the churches in Oslo LenkeKr.ania is an abbreviation much used in churchrecords, unfortunately.

'Krania' or 'Xania' is Kristiania, that is the city inside the borders at the time. If you don't have some addresses or aereas in which he might be born you have to search through a number of parishes. If you give some information (name and date) about your father-in-law I'm sure a lot of people here will give you a hand.leif erik otterå

Hi Moira,Krania is not a specific church, it is simply a statement that he was born in Kristiania. Why not share with us the information you have on your father-in-law; His name, link to his confirmation and anything else. Might help your helpers and you !

Thanks for all responses which are much appreciated. I did do my homework and searched all available records for Oslo as I had the birth date - Odd Bue born 7 July 1905 in Oslo. I also searched all available records for Stavanger and Biri just in case he had been baptised at his grandparents church! There are several siblings so the fact that I can't find any leads me to believe there are missing records. I researched the family for confirmations which I should have done earlier and came up with the following:- the family moved from Stavanger to Oslo 1902-1903 and ended up in Opsal Oestre Aker. I found the following records of interest from Oestre AkerOdd Bue konf. 3 okt 1920 f. 3/7 d.20/8 1905 Krania, foreldre Aasmund Bue post ekkspeditoer og hustru Eleonora f. KristiansenI think his brother's record is the key:- Haakon Bue konf. 2 okt 1921, f. 24/5 d. 18/8 1907 FagerborgI am assuming that all the siblings born in Oslo were born in Fagerborg before they moved to Opsal but there are no records that I have found for any of the siblings and there are no church records for this period. Do they exist? moira

Moira,I just e-mailed a request on your behalf, with your info (7), to the Fagerborg parish asking if they can confirm the baptism of Odd Bue on 20 August 1905 at that church. Will get back with info if/when they respond.

Moira, the records are probably not missing, but the parish has probably not yet handed them over to the national archives. When the parish responds to Kjell's request you will probably get the information you are looking for.

In answer to Tom (13) in English as it's after 17:00! The records say Sletheim but I don't know the street name. Eleonora owned land at the end of the railway (tram?) line to Opsal and the family also operated a kiosk there which is a fruit stand today. They also ran a hairdresser's shop. Aasmund died in 1929 at 48 from lungebeteanelse and 'Nora' the matriarch took care of the family. moira

Thank you very, very much, Moira. I grew up on Oppsal - and remember very well the kiosk. We spoke of the lady who ran it in the 50's/60's as 'Fru Bu' (which is Norwegian for Mrs. Kiosk) - and now you tell me that she actually was named Bue (which is pronounced exactly in the same way). Very funny to learn this.In my early teenage days (at that time) she used to have the (light porn) magazine 'Cocktail' up in the right hand corner of the kiosk window - and we youngsters stared. But I don't know anybody who actually dared bying (or asking for) it...Strangely enough I haven't heard the name 'Sletheim' before - so that's new to my Oppsal history. Once again THANK YOU VERY MUCH !

Hi Moira,I just got the confirmation of birth and baptism for Odd Bue from Fagerborg parish. He was born 3 July 1905 and baptised in Fagerborg church on 20 August same year, together with his sister twin Gunvor. At the time they were living at Schultzgate 10.
