Here is the parish register entry for their first child (second entry from the top of page 155)LenkeI have found Roland(at Tistel)and Thorbjørg(I assume she came from Midlang since 2 of her child's sponsers come from there, including her mother, Kari) in the 1801 census, so they were not married at that time. However, I haven't found an entry for their marriage. I also can't seem to find an entry for Thorbjørg's birth. Would someone please point me in the right direction?

Hi, Ann-Mary.Thank you for that link, but the entries in FamilySearch are notoriously inaccurate. People often, when a marriage date cannot be documented, will estimate one by dating it to one year before the birth of the first child. That's what this looks like. I was just hoping to find documenation for this marriage so I could identify with certainty who they and their parents were.

Ingrid, You are dismissing the entries in IGI, (2), but they appear to be as correct as one can verify. As you have found out from the 1801 census, Roland and Thorbjørg were not married in 1801, but when they christened their (first) child 18 Dec.-1804, they were married. This limits the search from 1801 to 1804, but for some reason their marriage is not recorded in the Vik parish records in that period. One hypothesis is that it may have to do with the fact that Thorbjørg was very young, (16 yrs in 1801), and that they needed a special license to be married. Vik was under Bergen both within the church and the public administration, so they may have been married there? When Thorbjørg was listed as 16 yrs in 1801, it could also mean that she was in her 16th year, i. e. not yet had her 16th birthday. That would indicate the birth years 1784-1785. Unfortunately the parish records for Vik for these years are not complete. Christenings end in 1783 and resume in 1787. No record of Thorbjørg can be found.A secondary source is supporting the IGI data, (could be the source for the IGI data). The local history for Vik, (Bygdebok for Vik by Olav Hoprekstad 1958, Vol III, p. 590), says in my translation: “Roland Gutormsen Tistel was born in 1778 and married Torbjørg Jonsdatter Midlang in 1803. … Roland Tistel died in 1847 and his wife in 1858. They had 5 children that we know about: -Gutorm who was married to Brita Ellingsdotter Fyli, they went to America in 1843. -Ola who was married to Ragnhild Olsdotter Dale, they went to America in 1843 together with Gutorm and Brita. -Endre, he went to America 10 years later in 1853. -Jon was born in 1817 and stayed at the farm for some time. He married Marta Olsdotter Kvam in 1864. -Marta who was married to Botolv Jonson espesete, he was a widower when he went to America in the 1870s, but their children had probably gone before.”Roland Gutormson Tistel was according to the same source p. 590, son of Gutorm Olson Stadheim (1744-1811) and Marta Jonsdotter Espesete (-1825).On page 618 – Midlang the same source says “Kari Hermundsdotter Midlang’s first husband died in 1783. She was married for the second time to Jon Olson Øvstedal. They had one daughter Thorbjørg.” This is consistent with the census data and that Thorbjørg was born 1784-1785.Regards Tore

Roland Guttormson Tistel (1778–1847) & 1803 Torborg Jondtr Midlang (1784–1858) frå lnr 100 fekk borna: Kari 1804 (lnr 98 Midlang), Guttorm 1808 (sjå fotnote lnr 20 Føli), Brita 1811 (lnr 11a Seim), Anna 1814–18, Jon 1817, Ivar 1819, Ola 1820 (sjå fotnote), Marta 1825 (lnr 93 Espesete) og Endre 1828 (USA 1846).

Ingrid, (7) above is a transcript from a newer version of the local history. Although it has some more details, it basically confirms the relationships and the dates you were asking initially. Torborg or Torbjørg was born in 1784 and she married Roland Guttormson in 1803.Tore
