Hello, My grandparents were all born in Norway in the towns noted above. In Mandal-VA, born 1877, Spangereid-VA born 1880, Sveio-Hordaland born 1884, Vennesla-VA born 1868. I am trying to learn about how many years of schooling they might have had based upon best educated guesses for the areas. Also at what age would they probably have started at, and what were the probable schools named for the 4 areas noted above.? Tusen takk for any insight that you may have.

The law of public education in rural areas in 1860 ( Loven om almueskoler paa bygdene) decided that children should be given 12 weeks education yearly for 5 years, from 8 to 13 years of age. Attending school was in principle compulsory, but social circumstanses could lead to differences: to some children cattle herding was a priority in spring and autum, while children from well off families might attend voluntary summer schools. Spangereid, Vennesla and Sveio are rural areas. Mandal is a town, and was as such subjected to The Law of public education in towns of 1848. School was compulsory from the childrens 7. year til their confirmation, if necessesary till they where 19 years old. There are (or should be) records in all municipal archives of all children attending school since before 1820. It may therefore (with some luck) be possible to look up your grandparents schooling in detail. I suggest you contact the administration of the kommuner in question.

Thank you Olav for the important information. So you are saying to contact the nunicipality of Spangereid and with some luck, I might get copies of any records they hold. If this is possible, is very interesting as my father was also schooled in Norway and I never thought his records would be possible to find.

Concerning Spangereid, it is now part of Lindesnes municipality, [url="http://www.lindesnes.kommune.no>http://www.lindesnes.kommune.noHowever, I think school records for Spangereid now are archived at IKAVA, http://www.ikava.no:http://www.ikava.no/Kataloger og eldre/Arkivlister Lindesnes/arkivkataloger_for_spangereid_ko.htmTiny URL:

Hi Dag and Olav,Thanks for your help. So are you saying that if I write them an email requesting records from my father, and my Grandmother, I may get some records. My dad went to school in Aavik and my GM, Othea Borufsen-Reiersen went to school in Aavik or Spangereid, I am not sure about her. They would both be applied for through that website. Tusen takk

Well, I guess it doesn't hurt to contact IKAVA in order to get further information. The person responsible for Lindesnes is Turid Holen, e-mail address holen [at] ikava.va.noDTH
