Svogeren min mener å ha sett om dem i Devils Lake, Ramsey County, ND.Han mener etternavnet Stade var brukt i de papirene han fikk se. The purpose of the home was to provide children with shelter, food and clothing while parents attempted to re-establish themselves after the depression.

Each year the fund provides about $40,000 in grants to organizations that are affiliated with the ELCA and operate in North Dakota. Nellie J. Stade was born in Norway in 1863. When she was 16, her family emigrated to the United Sates. When she was 20, Nellie and her brother, Andrew, came to Dakota Territory and opened a general store in Grand Harbor, near Devils Lake. Soon, another Norwegian immigrant, Jens Svee joined Nellie and Andrew in business and moved the store into Devils Lake. In 1893, Nellie and Jens were married. Jens entered into banking and eventually became vice president of Ramsey County National Bank. The Svees were very active members of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake. They participated generously through activities as well as financially in their church. After Jens death in 1929, Nellie continued being active in her church and giving. When she died in 1938, she left the major portion of her estate, $150,000, to the ELCA with instructions that the money was to be used for programs and agencies that serve the elderly, children or young people. The bequest has grown with interest to over $1 million today.

forts.Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota has traditionally been a primary recipient of Svee Fund grants. In 1940, a receiving home for children was set up in Devils Lake and named after Nellie. The Lutheran Welfare Society (now LSS/ND) was charged with the operation of the home that served Devils Lake and surrounding communities. In 1947, the ELCA took money from the Svee Fund to start the building of a similar children’s home in Fargo located on LSS/ND property. Construction was started in 1949 and the Svee Memorial Children’s Home was completed in 1951. The Svee gift has helped hundreds through this program alone over the years (see left). Her gift has helped and continues to help other LSS/ND programs. In 2004, $15,300 was granted to six programs — Day Report, DIVERT, Great Plains Food Bank, K.I.D.S. Clothing, Senior Companion Program and New American Services. Sixty-six years later, Nellie Svee’s gift is still giving. The grants are administered by the ELCA through the North Dakota Synods.
