Hei! Under et besøk på museet for Freeborn County i Albert Lea, Minnesota, for noen uker siden ble jeg spurt om jeg kunne hjelpe med å finne ut noe mer om 4 barn som reiste alene fra Heddal til Albert Lea i Minnesota i 1873. (Forespørselen ble 'trigget' av min smule interesse for en fam. Knatvold i Hayward/Albert Lea). Barnas foreldre var begge døde og det ble etterhvert ordnet slik at de reiste til sin slektning (som viste seg å være deres onkel, Ingebret Hansen Knatvold, f. 1819 i Heddal). Bildet nedenfor viser kopi av notisen som stod i den lokale avisen noen dager etterat barna kom fram, trolig i slutten av juni 1873.Etter litt leting i emigrasjonslistene fant jeg ut at de 4 barna het hhv. Harald f. 1857, Hans f. 1860, Ole f. 1865 og Margith f. 1867. De reiste med 'St.Olaf' fra Christiania 27.5.1873. Foreldrene, Ole Hansen Rødningen (f. 1822) og Margith Haraldsdatter (f. 1827) døde av lungebetennelse med noen få dagers mellomrom i februar 1870. I 1880-1882 finner jeg barna i Hayward, Freeborn County i Minnesota, men etter det har jeg ikke noe sikkert. Er det noen som kjenner til historien og som kan hjelpe meg videre?Bidrar gjerne med info om fam. Knatvold i og rundt Albert Lea også! Hvis noen er interessert. Har du funnet fødselsdatoer på barna?

Ingen problemer med å finne fødselsdatoer for barna i kirkeboka for Heddal!Jeg har fotokopi av kirkeboka for Hayward fra 1877 til rundt 1930 (veldig nyttig). Der stod det at Ole ble konfirmert i Hayward Luth Church 13.6.1880 og selv om jeg ikke har klart å identifisere søsteren Margith i FT 1880, er det ingen tvil om at hun var i live. Hun ble konfirmert i samme kirke 25.6.1882 som 'Marie'. Ikke uten videre gitt at det er dem, men navnene på foreldrene bekrefter det; hhv. Ole H. Rødningen og Margith/Marie Rødningen.Etter 1880-1882 har jeg ingen sikre opplysninger om noen av de 4. (Mulig kirkebøker for Albert Lea kan gi svar, men da må jeg vente til neste gang jeg er i Minnesota!)Mvh Kjell H

Hei!Kjell, are you looking to find the census listing of the Knatvold family??...not sure if you have the following info:In 1880 'Egbert' Knatvold age 61 and his wife Betsy are in Hayward, MN. His son, Edward (age 29) and HIS family are listed below Egbert. Then there is Ole Olsen age 15...perhaps this Ole was one of the 4 children you mentioned...?This is an amazing story about these children...!mvh Patty

Hi Patty! I was there on Oct 26 this year only to ask for the way to East Freeborn Luth. Church north of Albert Lea, but the librarian must have memory like an elephant! She recognized me from last time I was there (July this year) and also the fact that I had been researching, among others, the Knatvold family. (After July she had stumbled across the article where Mr. Knatvold's name is mentioned and remembered seeing the article when she saw me again).She didn't have the time to make a copy when I was there, but she sent the copy of the article by e-mail which was the only info I had to find out who the 4 children were. (It DID help me to know that Mr. Knatvold was born in Heddal and that they were not related to Mrs. Knatvold).I have returned her favour by sending her most of the information I found about the children's identity. Except for the confirmation of the 2 youngest (Ole and Margith/Marie) in 1880 and 1882 in Hayward, resp., there's nothing else to be found in the Haywards church records.The Knatvolds all moved to Albert Lea so I believe that is the first place to look for the 4 Olson children, too!That's about all I know so far!Have nice day!Kjell H

Hei Kjell!I wonder if the public library in Alberta Lea could be of some help??...I assume you were speaking to the librarian at the museum and not the 'public library'??..is that correct?I am just 'in awe' of this story...the children took about one month to travel to Alberta Lea from Norway.......amazing! And they made the trip alone (alene)...that is the really impressive thing!mvh Patty

You're right, Patty! It's the library in Freeborn County Historical Museum and not the public library in Albert Lea I'm talking about! Look at: http://www.smig.net/fchm/In July, the librarian at the museum presented me to a lot of their genealogical material and I'm sure I can find the Olson kids there if they stayed in Albert Lea. (Have to go back next summer).I agree with you - it's amazing that these kids did the trip alone and also so fascinating that the 12 year old took the lead when his elder brother fell ill. What's even more amazing is that the system actually let them go alone. (They must have had some adault accompanying them from Heddal to Christiania: According to the emigration record two of the children had a prepayed ticket - the journey for the other two was payed for in Christiania). Nevertheless, I just can't visualize 4 children doing the same trip alone now in 2010 .....!mvh Kjell

Yes Kjell, I found that website for the museum over the weekend...and had a 'look around' what they have on the internet.And I agree... the fact that 12 year old took over, when his older brother got sick is so impressive...oh, wouldn't you love to see a photo of these 4 children as they arrived in Alberta Lea in 1873...well, we can use our imaginations anyway.mvh Patty
