She was born to Hans and Clara Jensen in Tromso, Norway, on October 31, 1908, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1909, at the age of six months. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. She spoke and wrote Norwegian and kept in touch with many family members in Norway. She returned to Norway on two occasions to visit family.She owned and operated the Dairy Bar Cafe in Colfax, where she was well-known for her delicious homemade pies. She was a long-time member of the Merry Mixers and Area Nursing Home Guild and also volunteered for more than 25 years at the Senior Center in Colfax until she reached the age of 89.Hilly graduated from Colfax High School in 1928, and attended the music academy in Chippewa Falls. She had a beautiful singing voice and sang for many funerals and weddings in the Colfax area throughout her years. She also enjoyed the many years she spent singing in the choir at Colfax Lutheran Church. A very devout Christian, she was always active in her church, participating in circle, ladies aid, cooking, baking and serving whenever needed.Hilly loved to travel. She made several trips to California to visit family and many other trips throughout the United States including Hawaii. At the age of 80, she took a trip to Europe with two of her daughters. They visited England, Belgium, The Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.She married John Freestone on February 25, 1930, who preceded her in death in 1956. Also preceding her in death were brother, Nivan; sister, Borgny; daughter, Klaire Yakesh; sons-in-law, Richard Yakesh Jr. and Charles Rieder.Hilly is survived by her children, David (Jean) Freestone of Petaluma, Calif., Donald Freestone of Minneapolis, Minn., Bonita (Larry) Gibson of Eau Claire and Katherine Rieder of Colfax; eight grandchildren, Paula (Tim) Lutz of Pleasanton, Calif., Kristi Leone of Rohnert Park, Calif., Lisa Freestone of Petaluma, Calif., Greg (Lisa) Yakesh of Oswego, Ill., Craig (Tammi) Gibson of Eau Claire, Connie (Dale) Heckenlaible of Buffalo, Minn., Monique (Tim) Schumpe of Vallonia, Ind., and Yvette (Chris) Edwards of Colfax. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren, Justin Lutz of Tempe, Ariz., Morgan Lutz, Nichole (Arthur) Ginocchio of Rohnert Park, Calif., Tiffany Leone of Rohnert Park, Calif., Jenna, Jessica and Ryan Yakesh, Ty Heckenlaible, Jacob, Kyli, Celina and Brielle Schumpe; many nieces and nephews as well as an aunt and several cousins in Norway.Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, at Colfax Lutheran Church.In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Colfax Area Nursing Home, Colfax Lutheran Church or Colfax Senior Center.Sampson Funeral Home in Colfax is handling arrangements.
