L'ANSE, Mich. -- Marion G. Thompson-Tollefsen, 96, a former Sidnaw, Trout Creek and L'Anse resident died Thursday evening, March 16, 2006, at Bayside Village Nursing Home in L'Anse. She was born March 23, 1909, in Sidnaw, daughter of the late Reuben and Annie (Rickard) Bennett.Marion attended Sidnaw and Kenton schools and was a 1932 graduate of Kenton High School. She married Helmar Perry (Pat) Thompson July 1, 1933, in Crystal Falls, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 14, 1975. Marion worked as a restaurant cook and a riveter on military aircraft (Rosie the Riveter) during World War II at an aircraft plant in Arizona.She also worked for the Forest Service planting trees and had owned and operated the Thompson Boarding House and Adult Care Home until 1973.She enjoyed being near and doing various things with her family.She was a member of the Sidnaw United Methodist Church. Marion married Irving A. (Tolly) Tollefsen in 1983 and he preceded her in death in 1993. She is survived by sons, Thomas (Beverly) Thompson and Robert (Joan) Thompson, both of Sidnaw; daughter, Dorothy (Donald) Beck, Sidnaw; son-in-law, Robert Golden, Sidnaw; step-daughter, Dolores (Jack) Johnson of Richardson, Texas; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lorraine (Frederick) Beauprey, Sidnaw; sister-in-law, Alice Thompson, Trout Creek; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Marion was preceded in death by her first husband, Pat Thompson in 1975; son, Howard Thompson in 1984; daughter, Carol Golden in 2004; second husband, Tolly Tollefsen in 1993; three brothers, Robert Bennett, William and Carol Bennett; and five sisters, Pearl Bennett, Ruby Lintz, Nora Fesnick, June Collins-Toivonen and Eloise Hallada.

Ruth H. Small

(September 16, 1920 - June 20, 2011)

Ruth Small, 90, Sturgeon Bay, passed away Monday afternoon, June 20, 2011, at Cardinal Ridge Residential Care.

She was born Sept. 6, 1920, in L'Anse, Mich. (in the U.P.), the daughter of the late Ed and Olga (Shulstad) Kotila. Ruth grew up in Hancock, Mich., with two brothers, Earl and Myron. While attending Suomi College (Finlandia University) she met her lifelong friend, William Small while he was attending Michigan Tech. They married on Dec. 19, 1942, at Camp Rucker, Colo. Soon after, Bill began his service as an officer in World War II while Ruth did volunteer work stateside.

Ruth had three children, Bill, Jim and Lynn. They lived in Sturgeon Bay for several years then moved to Holland, Mich. and later Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. But Ruth's love of the North brought them back to Sturgeon Bay in 1957. Ruth was a stay-at-home Mom who later worked several jobs until she found her perfect match at the Door County Library. Many people remember her welcoming smile and her kind manner.

She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She enjoyed being a member of the Esther Circle. Ruth loved to be in her kitchen and gardens. The true joys of her life were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her son, William III; daughter, Lynn (John) Horne, Sturgeon Bay; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Bob) Rude, Prior Lake, Minn.; Andrew (Sarah), Chicago, Ill.; Eric (Melinda) Horne, Oconomowoc, Wis.; Rebecca (Rick) Wazny of Eagle, Wis.; six great-grandchildren, Robert and Jonathan Rude, Davis, Maeve, and Remy Small, Eli Wazny; her brother, Earl Kotila, Meridian, Idaho; sisters-in-law, Marie Kotila, Houghton, Mich.; Virginia Bender, New Canaan, N.H.; special friends, Nancy and Hans Feld, Judy Weber, Ben and Nick Fairweather.

The family of Ruth Small would like to thank Kris and the staff of Cardinal Ridge for making such a nice home for Ruth. A special thank you to the AseraCare Hospice group: Lisa, Shawn, Debbie, Tammy, Kim and Pastor Mike for their kind support. Thank you to Pastor Joe Mitchell of the United Methodist Church, Nancy Feld, Belle Vreeland and all Ruth's friends who took the time to brighten her day. Also, thank you to Dr. Jim Heise and Stephanie at North Shore Medical center for their kind and compassionate care extended to Ruth.

 

A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at Sturgeon Bay United Methodist Church. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m.

Memorials may be made in Ruth's name to the Friends of the Door County Library or the United Methodist Church, Sturgeon Bay, Wis.

Perry “Pat” Romulus Raymond

Feb. 20, 1921 — Jan. 3, 2008

Perry “Pat” Romulus Raymond, of Bend, died Thursday of natural causes. He was 86.

At his request, no services will be held.

Mr. Raymond was born Feb. 20, 1921, in Baraga, Mich., the son of Harvey and Ruth (Shulstad) Raymond. He married Alice Kruse on Sept. 26, 1946.

Mr. Raymond served in the U.S. Air Force from 1943 to 1945 as a B-17 waist gunner. He was taken as a prisoner of war and endured the “Death March Across Germany.” He worked as a saw filer at Brooks-Scanlon Lumber Co., later DAW Forest Products Co., for 24 years, retiring in 1985. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time outdoors. He moved to Oregon in 1959.

Survivors include two sons, Robert, of Bend, and Peter, of Lebanon; two daughters, Joan Cofoed and Julie Welbourn, both of Bend; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife and two brothers.
