August Amundsen

I am trying to find additional information regarding my great-great-grandfather, August A. Amundsen.

This is what I know...

  • Born 1868 in Kristiania, Norway.
  • Immigrated to the United States between 1885 and 1895. According to his petition for naturalization (to become a US citizen) he arrived in New York on 23 September 1892.
  • Married Ida F. Reinhardt in 1896. Their children's names were Cornelius Alfred Amundsen, Arthur Willard Amundsen and Madeline Amundsen.
  • While in America, he spent most of his life working as a barber. (New York 1895 to about 1908; Massachusetts about 1908 to 1918)
  • Died 23 January 1918 in Massachusetts. At the time, an acquaintance believed he had relatives living in Massachusetts.

So far, the only positive match I have been able to find for August (through this site) is in the 1885 census for Bergen under the name "August Amunsen." He appears to have been employed by Mateo Pisani as a barber's assistant. Checking the 1875 census for Bergen, I found an Amundsen family -- Ole Amundsen, Inger Karoline (Iverson) and children -- living near the same Pisani family, but August is not among them.

Other possible matches include...

  • Loddtrekningsliste for Bergen 1860-1890: August Aleksander Amundsen born 02 March 1868 Kristiania
  • 1875 Census for Bergen: August Alisander born 1868 Christiania, recorded as foster-son of Chornelius Jensen and Karen Johane (Hansdatter).

I would very much like to know who August's parents were, if he had any siblings and if any of his relatives also immigrated to America.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Thank you for your replies Ann-Mary, and for taking the time to do a search. Unfortunately, I had already found each of these records and am no closer to

discovering who August's parents were or if he had any siblings. After 20 years of searching, I'm beginning to wonder whether the mystery will ever be solved.

Can you think of any websites or message boards (other than ancestry.com and familysearch.org) that I should try?

Tomtegata does not exist anymore, after the building of the 'new' Oslo Central Station - Oslo S. The street was the nearest street on the left hand side of the old Østbanen, East Railway station. It is not far from Grünerløkka, which lies on the other side of the river Akerselva.
