Barbara Beckman, age 75, of Dodgeville died unexpectedly on Monday, May 24, 2010 at Upland Hills Health in Dodgeville. The former Barbara Wangsness was born on August 20, 1934 at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, the second of two daughters of Martin and Cora (Beld) Wangsness.

 

Immediate survivors include three children, David of Madison; Susan (Kevin) Gorton of Cottage Grove and Daniel of Dodgeville; two grandchildren, John Gorton and Jennifer Gorton; and a sister, Katie Bradley of DeForest. She is also survived by brothers/ sisters-in-law, Myron "Bud" (Karen) Beckman of Watertown; Harold "Buzz" (Fran) Beckman of Manitowoc and Arlene Beckman of Beloit; three nieces; five nephews, many great nieces, great nephews and friends.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph on December 24, 2002; her parents and brothers-in-law, William Beckman; Howard Beckman and Frank Bradley.

 

Barb graduated from the DeForest High School and then worked in the office of Ethan Insurance Agency for several years. On October 21, 1956, Barb and Ralph Beckman were married in DeForest. Initially living on Oklahoma and Montana Military Bases while Ralph served in the Air Force, the couple relocated back to Wisconsin and eventually settled in Dodgeville in early 1964. Barb and Ralph operated a grain and beef farm since that time and lovingly encouraged each of their children through school and thereafter. Barb was a homemaker, a working farm wife and stay-at-home Mom until going to work at Lands' End where she retired after 16 years in 2004.

 

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Dodgeville a former Iowa County Homemaker and Girl Scout Leader and a UW Badger Basketball season ticketholder. Barb was interested in finance, sports and movies while her hobbies included gardening, puzzles, reading, crosswords and most especially doting over her grandchildren. She enthusiastically followed local sports teams including the Packers and Badger Football and Basketball as well as other teams.

 

Barb was known for her optimistic attitude, strong will, supportive nature, consistent friendliness and great sense of humor. She greatly enjoyed getting together with former co-workers, neighbors, former schoolmates and her loving family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 28, 2010 at Grace Lutheran Church in Dodgeville. Pastor Steven R. Kottke will officiate with burial in East Side Cemetery. Friends may call from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday at the Lulloff-Peterson-Houck Funeral Home in Dodgeville and at the church on Friday after 10:00 A.M.
