tattoo.jpgIn conjunction with Harley-Davidson’s 110th anniversary celebration, the Museum presents its first tattoo exhibition, highlighting the work of Amund Dietzel, who came to Milwaukee in 1913. This exhibition celebrates one hundred years since Dietzel’s arrival, and in the midst of what many consider a renaissance of tattooing, the Museum is proud to present the work of one of its earliest masters. Dietzel helped define the look of the “traditional” or “old school” tattoo, kept the practice alive through two world wars, and passed on his craft to future generations.

Born in Kristiania, Norway, Dietzel (1891–1974) learned the art of hand-tattooing on a Norway merchant ship. When the ship was wrecked off the coast of Quebec, Dietzel and a few others decided to stay. Dietzel traveled with his close friend William Grimshaw, working carnivals as tattooed men and tattooing between shows.

Passing through Milwaukee at twenty-three, Dietzel decided to make the city his home. He opened a tattoo parlor and soon had a reputation as the region’s premier tattoo artist—and the one to whom World War I and II sailors and Marines went before leaving for battle. In 1964 at the age of seventy-three, Dietzel sold his shop to his friend Gib “Tatts” Thomas. The two worked together in the studio until the city banned tattooing, effective July 1, 1967. “At least it took the city fifty-one years to find out that it doesn’t want me,” said Dietzel.

Tattoo draws exclusively from the Solid State Tattoo Collection, courtesy of Jon Reiter. Reiter, himself a Milwaukee-based tattoo artist, has spent years amassing a collection of Dietzel “flash” (tattoo design drawings) and peripheral Dietzel Studio material. In addition to collecting the artist’s work, Reiter has carefully researched Dietzel’s life and published a two-volume catalogue of his creative output, These Old Blue Arms: The Life and Work of Amund Dietzel.

The Illustrated Man...Amund Dietzel

amund1.jpg

Last summer, Milwaukee Tattoo historian and artist (Solid State Tatoo) Jon Reiter released his beautifully designed and exhaustively researched book, These Old Blue Arms: The Life and Work of Amund Dietzel. Click here to view or order.

Amund Dietzel was born in Kristiana (now Oslo), Norway in 1891. At the age of 14, he left his homeland on a merchant ship (at the time, the fourth largest merchant fleet on earth) and spent the next 3 years of his life at sea. The art and significance of tatoos to the insular world of men at sea had a great effect on the young Norwegian. With home made tools and no small amount of drawing skills he went to work learning the art of tatooing by practicing on his shipmates. A timely shipwreck brought an abrupt end to his ocean travels and left him on the the shores of North America. Later, while in Connecticut, he developed a close friendship with a British immigrant tatoo artist named William Grimshaw. The two men inked each others bodies from head to toe (photo above, circa 1914) and hit the carnival circuit. They exhibited themselves, sold photographs of their inked bodies and provided tatoos for curious carnival goers. In 1914, Dietzel arrived in Milwaukee. He liked what he saw. Who wouldn't? America's machine shop was in full stride. The vitality of the immigrant city was a perfect fit for the Norwegian with unusual skills. He would spend the rest of his life in the Cream City. Two World War's worth of tatoo hungry soldiers and sailors from nearby Great Lakes Naval Station brought him both a wealth of customers and worldwide word of mouth advertising. He was soon known as the finest tatoo artist in the midwest.

Milwaukee was at it's nadir as a city when the Milwaukee Common Council banned tattoo parlors in 1967. Dietzel got in the last word, "At least it took the city fifty-one years to find out it doesn't want me. Milwaukee used to be a very nice town." Dietzel passed away in 1974.

Amund Dietzel was born in the town of Fredrikstad, Norway in 1890, and went to sea at the tender age of ten. He learned the art of hand tattooing during those early sailor years. While with the Danish Merchant Marines, Dietzel was ship-wrecked in the Saint Lawrence Seaway and stayed in the United States. By 1907 he was tattooing on State Street in Chicago.

dietzel2_wm.jpg

As with other tattooists of his era, Dietzel worked in many cities, including New Haven, CT, Albany, NY, Detroit, MI, and Columbus, OH. In Columbus he met Fred Clark who went on to tattoo for the side show. 1915 found Dietzel back on State Street, this time working with Bill Grimshaw.

In 1916 he made the move to Milwaukee and opened a shop at #207 Third Street. He still hit the road in the summer months to tattoo in different towns. It was around this same time that Nick Melroy started working on two tattoo machine frame designs that went on to be associated with Dietzel.

In the 1940's Dietzel moved to larger quarters at #948 Plankton Avenue in Milwaukee. It was here that Dietzel had the space to gear up for the war time business that was heading his way. During World War II, the Plankton location had four tattooists (including Dietzel) working 12 hour shifts.

In 1963 the state of Illinois raised the minimum age for getting a tattoo to twenty-one. Most of the tattooists left town and several relocated to Milwaukee. This was of little bother to Dietzel who was still doing sailing ships for $2.50, and had all the business he could handle.

Milwaukee got caught up in the legislation against tattooing, and in 1967 outlawed tattooing within the city limits. Dietzel's comment was, "At least it took the city fifty-one years to find out it doesn't want me. Milwaukee used to be a very nice town."

TRAVERSE CITY - Eldon C. "Don" Henricks, 86, of Traverse City, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at Munson Hospice House, following an illness of several months.
Born Dec. 9, 1917, in Milwaukee, he was the son of Edward A. and Gladys (VanOudshoorn) Henricks. He attended school in Milwaukee before joining the Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet in 1940. On July 2, 1941, he married Dorothy L. Dietzel. For the duration of World War II, he served as a flight instructor in California and Arizona, receiving his commission as a captain in 1943. Among the many cadets he prepared for service was American film actor James Stewart. Don maintained an avid interest in aviation for his entire life.
Don began a 32 year career in the automotive industry in 1947, joining the Oldsmobile Division as zone service representative in Madison, Wis. His later work with Oldsmobile in Lansing and Chicago led to a 1958 transfer to General Motors corporate headquarters in Detroit. He served for three years as a GM representative on the auto industry advisory committee to the National Highway Safety Board. He retired as director of product service training in 1979.
Following retirement, Don and his wife settled in Traverse City where they were among the founders of the Friends of the Traverse Area District Library. The support Don provided to many local organizations was notable and included Interlochen Arts Academy, where he endowed a scholarship fund, in memory of his wife, following her death in 1990. But he will perhaps be best remembered for his trademark gifts of candy and pears to friends, neighbors and professional acquaintances and for his efforts to offer advice or a helping hand in almost any situation. He will also be remembered for his intelligence and independence and for being a gentleman in the truest sense of the word.
Don is survived by two sons, Steve (Sue Ellen) Henricks of Traverse City and Douglas (Katherine) Henricks of Ft. Myers, Fla.; and three step grandchildren, Michael (Larine), and Danielle and Matthew Nixon, all of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his brother, Glenn; and his daughter, Sandra L. Beye.
In keeping with Don's wishes, no funeral services will be held. His ashes will be buried in the Garden of Remembrance at the First Congregational Church in Traverse City.
Don requested that memorial contributions be directed to the Henricks Visual Arts Scholarship Fund at Interlochen Arts Academy.
"I'm leveled off at four thousand feet, watching for the luminosity in the sky ahead that will mark the city of Paris. I can imagine that I'm looking through the earth to the heavens on the other side. I want to prolong this culminating experience of my flight--I almost wish Paris were a few more hours away. It's a shame to land with the night so clear and so much fuel in my tanks." Charles A. Lindberg, Spirit of St. Louis.

Sistnevnte døde for noen år siden.

Kilden til disse opplysniingen er i hovedsak Jon Reiters bok "These Old Blue Arms" bind 1
