My great great grandfather, Andrew Brovald, had a fascinating life! This was copied from the Grand Forks Herald in 1936:
A pioneer lays down his walking cane. At the age of 94, after an adventurous and pioneer life in many lands and over the seven seas Andrew Brovald of Grand Forks is dead.

Until last winter he had been in good health. Mr. Brovald was baptized Osbyorn Osbyornson Levja Brovald. He was born in May, 1842 in Kinsarvik Hardanger, Norway. At the age of 14 years he hired out as a seaman. As Second Mate, Captain and ship owner he sailed the 7 seas and visited many lands the world over. He was shipwrecked in the North Sea where he broke his collar bone and clung to a plank for 24 hours before help came. He was in different battles with sea rovers in the mid ocean and fought pirates on the coast of Africa.

In 1879 this 6’2” Viking was honored with the privilege as guard for the brother of the King of Norway and Sweden that came to Haugesund, Norway, for the 1000 years festival in memory of Harold Haarfage (Fairhair) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Haarfager.

In the 1880’s Mr. Brovald came to America on his first of many trips to this land. He afterwards crossed the Atlantic 7 times. He decided to settle down in the U.S. and first went to Chicago and later Coucil Bluffs, Iowa, and then he started to sail up the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers and bought provisions at Fort Benton, North Dakota, at the time when the North Dakota Indians were very restless. Later he worked as a ship carpenter on the Missouri River when the North Dakota Capitol was built in 1883.

In 1886 he sent for his family and they came to Portland, North Dakota where he had a store and café.

In 1899 homesteading was opened up in Northern Minnesota and he moved his family to Wank, Minnesota, where he first homesteaded for himself – then 80 acres for his wife, and later 80 acres for his grown daughter at Gully, Minnesota. In 1920 he moved to Grand Forks where Mrs. Brovard died in 1928 at the age of 89 and where he died in September, 1936. They are both buried in Grand Forks.

Ett år skiller, men tror nok det er riktig person som er funnet. Det er nok ikke så mange med det navnet.

Ved WW 1 reg. oppgis f.dato 12. oktober 1879. En dag feil, men skulle vel allikevel bekrefte at det er riktig familie som Carsten fant.
