Nils Nilsen 1811 Lier

Recommended Posts

Nils Nilsen was born on 20th November 1811 at Brastad in Lier, Buskerud.

He has been spoken about before on this forum, though many years ago.

I think he may have been adopted, and I would like to know if there is any way to prove it.

This is the link to his baptism:

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8440&idx_id=8440&uid=ny&idx_side=-165

Is there any information in this baptism record that gives a clue about exactly who his mother was?
I noticed that it was a home baptism. What does this mean?
I cannot find his mother in the 1815 census for Lier.

It has been suggested that she was Ingeborg Christensdr, the daughter of Christen Olsen and Ragne Bjørnsdr, who was born in 1788.
But I cannot find any links with this family and Nils Nilsen.

I can find Nils father in the 1815 census, who is now married, and living with his wife and child.

But the only Nils Nilsen I can find that matches him is living with Peder Olsen and Aase Andersdr.

Nils was confirmed in 1826. At the time he was living at 'Tranbye Eie'.

Peder Olsen died at Tranbyeie on 5th September 1830.

Nils Nilsen was married in November 1830 and at the time was living at 'Tranby'.
His first child (Peternille) was born one month later and he is still living at 'Tranbyeie'
When his next two children were born, Johannes (1834) and Andreas (1839) he was living at 'Svangs Eie'.

I found that Aase Andersdr died at 'Svangseie' in 1843.

There seems to be close links to Nils Nilsen and Peder Olsen/Aase Andersdr.

But I cannot find any links to Ingeborg Christensdr after 1811.
She cannot be found in the 1815 census for Lier.

Is there any way that I can find if Nils Nilsen was adopted by Peder Olsen and Aase Andersdr?

Hope you can help.

Chris Nilsen.

The first law about adoption in Norway came in 1917, so prior to this, children were not legally adopted, but just raised in foster care.

I see that one of the vitnesses at the christning in 1811 is called Christen Xstensen (Christensen) Brastad, maybe this is Ingeborgs brother. Christen was the son of Christen Larsen 1751-1839 and his wife Anne Maria Haraldsdtr born about 1753. Christen Christensen was born 1778-dead before 1825 and married to Siri Olsdtr. In the bygdebok from Lier, under the farm Brastad  mellom, u will find this family, no Ingeborg is mentioned here thou. Christen and Anne Maria also had the daugther Anne. But they are not married in Lier, and maybe they got some children born outside of Lier as well. It seems that Christen Larsen was born in Lier. A lot of people from Lier used the church Bragernes in Drammen, included my own family who also lived on the Brastad farm.

This is the link to the 1801 cencus for Lier http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01058276001609 as you can see after Anne Christensdtr (Christens sister), its a boy called Carl Andersen 20 year, Christen Larsen is his uncle, maybe Christen L. is the uncle of Aase Andersdtr too.

You could send a mail to Statsarkivet Kongsberg, maybe they can help you find a probate (skifte) (if it exists) after Christen Larsen in 1839 (its not scanned)

I think Anne has found the parents of Ingeborg, and they lived at Klemmetsdal (Lillevollen).  Her father was Christen Olsen Jensvoll (ca. 1749 - 1804) and his 3. wife, Ragne Bjørnsdatter Nordal (#7 probate).  Ingebor/Ingeborg was born 23.12.1788 and bap. three days later,

Maybe Ingebor Christensdatter died - have you looked for her death? Or did she move or got married?

Nils may have been raised by Peder and Aase -  you must try to find out more about them (relatives to Ingebor?).

When Peder is buried in 1830, he was kirketjener (church worker) og husmann, living at Tranby-eie, as mentioned in #1.

Baptized at home/hjemmedøpt means that the newborn child was so weak, that they "took no chances" and baptized him at home.

Later the baptism was confirmed in church,

Wow!!!

Thank you everybody for your answers.

I had a look at the probate record for Ragne Bjørnsdatter.

Is somebody able to translate some of it for me?

Am I correct that it says that Ingeborg was a servant in Brastad of Torsten Gulbrandsen?

If so this is very good news as Torsten Gulbrandsen was the father of Nils Torstensen who was the father of this Nils Nilsen.

This would prove to me that this Ingeborg is the mother.

But what happened to Ingeborg Christensdr is still a mystery.

I cannot find a death for her in the years 1811-1815 in Lier.

I cannot find a marriage for her in Lier.

I cannot find her in the 1865 census.

But there is a death in 1874 in Lier that could be her:

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=5885&idx_id=5885&uid=ny&idx_side=-330

I shall do some more research and see if I can find some relatives of Peder & Aase.

Maybe they fostered Nils Nilsen. They had no children of their own.

And I cannot find Ole, Ellen or Marte in Lier in 1815 either.

So I am guessing they all left Lier to be cared for by someone else.

But where?

Does the Probate record give any hints.

Thank you.

Chris.

I hope someone can translate the probate.  I tried to read it, and noticed this:

Ragne remarried after Christen died i 1804, and had a daughter (Christine Hansdatter)  with her second husband, Hans Nielsen.

She was 2 years in 1810.

Her children with Christen was:

Ole, 16, living at home

Ellen, 15, also living at home (NB:  Ellen/Elen was a boy)

Ingeborg, 22 and yes, she was working for Torsten Gulbrandsen Brastad

Marthe, 7, living at home.

Take a look at the bap. of Maren (nr. 62), on Oct. 10th, 1818.  Among fadderne (godmother/godfather?) we find Ingeborg Xtensdt., Elen Xtensen and Ole Xtensen, all living at Wiger (Viker).  Three of the siblings in 1818?

Marthe Christensd. Frogner was confirmed in 1819.

Elen (Ellen) Christensen married Anne Larsdatter Ask in june 1826 (several children).  Elen died in 1853.  You can read about the family in Liers historie,

Nordre Ask (Nylende).  Ole Christensen married Ingeborg Johnsdatter (Jonsdatter) Hennum in October 1833.  She died in 1883 - haven´t found his death yet.

Doesn´t help much in your search for Ingeborg Christensdatter, BUT her brothers lived their lives in Lier,

The message from Anne about the Probate Record has prompted me to look for a Probate Record for Peder Olsen.

I found this:

http://arkivverket.no/URN:sk_read/25474/869/

Is someone happy to read it for me?

I think it mentions Nils Nilsen.

I think this might just be a register.

How do I find the real Probate Record?

I searched for over 100 pages but couldn't find it.

Hoping someone can help.

Regards,

Chris.

The date of his death was the 6th September 1830.

What you found, was a notification of his death (Dødsmeldinger - register of death).  I think is says:

6. september 1830: Peder Olsen kirketjener Tranby-eie død i gaar.  Anmeldt af Niels Nielsen for ingen barn men kone

(6. sept. 1830 Peder Olsen kirketjener (church worker) Tranby-eie died yesterday.  Notified by Niels Nielsen on behalf of no children but wife).

Thank you Astrid, I appreciate your help.

Maybe there was no probate for him.

I think I found the 'Alphabetical Register' of probate and didn't find his name.

And I think the probate records for Aase Andersdr have not been scanned yet.

But the fact that Nils Nilsen was the notifier of his death I think gives another link to these families.

Not sure what else I can do to prove it.

Regards,

Chris.

There are obviously close links between Nils Nilsen and Peder Olsen and Aase Andersdatter - no doubt about it.  They had no children of their own, so for reasons we only can guess, Nils was raised by them.  At that time it was a great shame to have a child outside wedlock (uekte barn), so life for Ingeborg must have been very difficult.  Her parents were dead and her brothers and sisters were too young to be of any help, so she didn´t have many choices if the father of the child didn´t help her.   Ingeborg had to work and she was not the only unmarried mother to leave her child with others (I think she knew them).   I guess she did what she thought was the best for her son,
