Hello

My maternal Great Grandfather Jacob Olson Dahle was born in Namsos June 24th 1833.

Reportedly born a twin.

Mother and twin brother died in Norway shortly after birth.

Father in died in Norway when Jacob was 3 years old.

Jacob Olson Dahle was then taken by friends/neighbors and sent to the land of the midnight sun to work on fishing boats.

As an adult he returned to Namsos, worked for a German owned logging company and had for a mate a man named Karl/Carl Mork.

Jacob age 33 left Norway in 1866 via Bergen on the ship Norden and landed in Quebec, Canada.

Then made his way to Decorah Iowa and later Renville Minnesota.

I have contacted the Archive and they did locate a record of male twins born June 22 1833 in Nord Trondelag, Fosnos Parish, parents

are Ole Estensen and Anna Amundsdatter. "Parish register #773A05 (1831-1856).Birth and baptism records 1833 page 9 entries 48 and 49.

My job now is to locate death records for Ole and Anna as I believe this will help confirm or deny that the twins Jacob and Isak are who we are looking for.

Can anyone assist us in this search?

Kind regards

Mrs. Devon Michelle Long

Looks like you have received some wrong information about this family. So I think you should consider the information you have received in this thread about Ole Estensen.

Also saw that you mentioned that Jacob emigrated from the port of Bergen. Would have expected that he had emigrated from the port of Trondheim.

Helloo Trove,

Was it normal then to confirm children 17 years after their birth ?

As I do not know Jacob's parents names I can not confirm that the birth and baptism records are his.

How common would it have been to have male twins born it the same area and the same year that Jacob was born? It's difficult to pin down.

My primary source of information on Jacob Olson Dahle (how name appears in article) is a newspaper article written about him after his death.

Birth: Namsos Norway June 24th 1831 ( NOT 1833 ) my mistake.

Mother & twin brother dying a few days after birth.

Father died when he was three.

Taken in by kind neighbors, when he was old enough to be of use they put him to work on the fishing boats.

Wich info about Ole Estensen are you suggesting I look at? The one about his possible father or death record?

Devon, the search for your Jacob Olsen was based on the birth being in June 1833 not 1831 so its possible we looked for the wrong family. The info you received on the birth records is the same we found in Fosnes?

FYI confirmations in Norway sometimes were even at age 21/. Normally, average age was 16-17

Haldor Olsen ( see # 6 + # 9 ) was not related to Jacobs family as he was born in Lille-Elvdal

It is strange that details about Jacob above are similar to your story though. It was very common for childrenj to be raised by other families when the mother died. But do not have the opinion that they were raised to work for that family. Many children went to work on other farms at age 13-14 as times were very hard in those days.

Do you have documentation for Jacobs arrival in the USA? You might find more information there as to his place of birth etc.

Sorry we could not help you further with your family search.

Hello,

Assuming that I have the correct "Jacob Olson Dahle" recorded on the arrival info for the Norden into Quebec in 1866, it would be the only official link back to Norway known for him.

The newspaper article written after his death states he went onto Decorah, Iowa after his arrival in Quebec, Canada. This has yet to be confirmed as

I believe his arrival into Iowa was between Census years, he worked as a carpenter in Iowa.

One settled in Minnesota the information is abundant due to census recordings.

His death was as sad as his beginning. he was delivering milk by horse and cart and was hit by a train while crossing the railway tracks and died at the station.

I appreciate the help and am grateful and open to further suggestions :o)

Kind regards

Well, since he is Jacob Olson, his father's given name is Ole.

There were no twins born in Fosnes in 1831 and not in 1832 either.

You asked how common would it have been to have male twins born in the same area and the same year that Jacob was born. With one of the twins being named Jacob Olson I would say it is not likely. I feel convinced they must be the right twins.

What I meant to say about the father Ole Estensen, was that it does not look like he died when Jacob was 3 years old. I think you should consider the Ole Estensen who died in 1861.

Found in the parish records for Halmøy (Flatanger) in Fosnes that Jakob Olsen Dale, 34 years old emigrated 15th April 1866.

Kildeinformasjon: Nord-Trøndelag fylke, Halmøy (Flatanger) i Fosnes, Ministerialbok nr. 771A02 (1840-1869), Inn- og utflyttede 1864-1869, uten sidenr.

Hello again Trove

I feel that they also must be the same twins.

This is Jacob O. Dahle and his family on the 1900 Census for Minnesota, lines 8-14. Notice his birth year is June 1833.......

I believe he was still in Iowa in the late 1860's early 1870's.

Im also noticing that Family Search seems to be far more prolific than Ancestry~!

Also I have a Jacob Olsen Dahle recorded as a passenger on the Ship Norden departing Bergun 1866.

I will toooooootally consider the Ole Estensen that died in 1861.

Thank you again,

Devon

I found that the sister Anne Dorthea (born 1827) was confirmed in 1843 and that she moved to Namsos in 1849, 20 years old.

Perhaps Jacob had relatives in Winneshiek county,Iowa. Do you know anything about the parents etc. of his wife and where in Norway she came from?

June 1866 voyage of Norden from Bergen to Quebec City,Canada

" I hereby certify that my ship this voyage is freighted for lump [?] of Mr. Joachim Hanson in Bergen. And as I this morning, called all passengers on deck to ascertain their true number before reaching the Quarantine Place [Grosse Île] I found there was 22 passengers more onboard than on the charters lists, whose Names are above specified. And I likewise state that these passengers have been put onboard the ship without my will or knowledge [sic], and that all the above as well as these particulars are now true and correct. [signed] June the 4th 1866 M. Todsen"

The following story was told by Captain Ole Marius Volkmar Thoresen. Thoresen started his career as a crew member on the Bark "Norden" in 1866.

The crowded ship left Bergen with 403 crew and passengers. The hold had been divided by a between deck, set up of planks. On the between deck there was set up bins fitted with bunks. There was one row along each side, and one along the middle of the ship. There was a narrow passage between the bunks. A primitive toilet on each side of the deck. Over the hatch there was built a hood with an entrance down to the passengers quarters. There was no other ventilation than this, and the only fresh air came trough this entrance. When the weather was rough the entrance had to be closed, and it would be dark as in the night down in the hold. Usually the passengers would be given a few oil-lamps in the evening, but these were taken out at 10 o'clock in the evening. Only those passengers who had their bunks near to the entrance in the hatch, would get a small touch of fresh air. There was a terrible smell and poor air. Only the toilet on the leeward side could be used, and there would always be a queue of people waiting to use the toilet. The seasickness led to a lot of filth, and the air down in the hold was so sickening that the crew would almost faint when they had to go down to clean up. To clean the air the mate an two of the crew went down with a bucket of tar and a plate with glowing iron. With a tong the iron was dipped in to the tar, and then lifted up in the air, releasing a lot of smoke from boiling tar. The smoke would help against the terrible smell. One of the crew members carried a piece of canvas for putting out flames, incase the tar should catch fire. Many of the passengers would not have the possibility to wash them selves during the journey, only a few had strength enough to get up on deck to gather rainwater for washing. There was only one place to cook, and it was always occupied. It is likely that some of the passengers were not able to cook a warm meal during the entire crossing. They would eat only dry food an flat-bread, with water. The ship carpenter rationed out the water, and was therefore referred to as the "waterman". When the ship arrived in Quebec the captain, mate and boatsman were given presents and thanked by the passengers for the nice treatment. The Captain went with the passengers up to Montreal to help them on their way.

Help Trove

I can not say for 100% sure that he did not.

The article written in the newspaper simply states that he left with

It states only that he emigrated with others from him native land.

Dorthea Oleson, Jacob's wife is mentioned in side notes written on the article.

A relative wrote that she came from a family of 12 children.

That her father died in a war and the family was split up.

That's all that is known of his wife.

Again thank you for all the help I am most appreciative.

Kind regards Devon

According to the US 1900 census Dorthea Dahle was born in Norway November 1847.

Year of immigration is 1864 for both of them and marriage year (estimated) is 1865.

Parish records have 1866 as year of emigration for Jacob. I have tried to find him in the 1865 census for Norway, will try some more.

Devon, when Jacob Olsen Dale emigrated from Fosnes April 1866 he was unmarried ( ungkarl )

If this Jacob is your Jacob he must have married in the USA?

There is a farm named Dale in Fosnes so possibly the name Dahle iis a mispell of Dale?

Dahle is also the name used in Quebec City on the passenger list but there is no Dorthea on the Norden

with Jacob Olsen Dahle June 1866.

Dahle is not a misspelling, it is the way it is often spelt.

The two oldest children were born in Iowa. Perhaps it is possible to find their birth/baptism and also the marriage of Jacob and Dorthea.
