OK, was it the same in Norway as in Sweden to staff the army?  The allotment system?  Farms grouped into communities that supplied one soldier?  The soldier was provided with a small home and plot of ground to support his family.  Then the soldier had to go to war if called.

 

We had an ancestor who left Voss , Norway called a Corporal , for Kongsberg.  There he apparently was still known as a Corporal.  This was about 1800.

 

Nils Engebretsen was still called a Sergeant at the birth of a child in Hole, Tyristand in 1876.
