I'm researching my grandfather Ivar Fossen DOB: 1July1909 who immigrated to America in 1930.  Parents are Toger Olson Vatterland DOB: 18Jan1875 and Mari Iversdatter Syverstuen DOB: 3Dec1874.  I have found the family in the 1910 census from Nord-Fron but can't find any other information to the family.  Any help or suggestions as to how to research would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you

Thank you for all the useful research!  I have a typewritten Paper stating the DOB of all Ivar's siblings and I have Oskar Fossen DOB :6Dec1904 and death as 5June1976.  I'm not sure if that is the correct Oscar you have found?  Can I ask how you found all this information?  I live in Minnesota and would love to learn how to research more of the family by the method you are using.  Do I need to be a member of digitalarkivet?  Thank you again!

I searched for Oskar in the parish registers for Nord-Fron on the basis of the 1910 census. Sometimes the birth dates in this census are not correct due to the information in the birth records. But in this case both the census and the parish register say that Oskar was born on 31 August 1904. Do you have the names and birth dates for all Iver's siblings?

In 1910 they were four siblings:

Oskar, born 31 August 1904

Rønnaug, born 12 December 1905

Maria, born 21 September 1907

Iver, born 1 July 1909

Are these names and birth dates correct according to you your typewritten paper? Did Iver have younger siblings too?

The DOB you have for Oscar and Rönnaug are not correct, but Marie's and Ivar's are.

The daughter Anne born 1860 may be this one born out of wedlock:

"Forsørges af Faderen med Bidrag af Amtskassen" means that the father is providing for her and additionally they gets a contribution to her upbringing from the municipal? authorities. Her mother had perhaps died, or the girl may have had special needs due to a handicap of some sort?

To find out when people died, you'll have to browse the church books for that area from the time you last have seen the individual registered in church books (as sponsor to a baptism for instance) or in censuses.

If there is written 'bygdebøker' for that area, you may be fortunate that the authors already have found the dates of births and deaths for you. :)

That is great that this matches with what I have been given!  I'm still consfused on using the search function in Arkivverket, do I just type in the name of the person I'm looking for and it will give me the options to select from?

Here is a link to tips in searching transcribed censuses and church books: How to search the data

It is many different ways to spell a name, so you ought to write as little as possible in the search field. For instance will the name Christian easiest be found if you write *ristian and Christopher *risto*. The reason is that the names may have been registered as: Christian, Kristian and Christopher, Christoffer, Christofer, Kristoffer, Kristofer...  The sign |   (or) is also important to use:  Berte|Berthe|Birte|Birthe|Berta|Bertha  or  Bert*|Birt*.

The year of birth can vary, so it is best to use * and | here too: Born 187*|188*

Farm names can be written in different ways: Vaterland / Waterland /Watterland f.i. and can also be misinterpretet by the indexer. (An 'o' becomes an 'a' in this example: https://forum.arkivverket.no/topic/200029-folketellig-1910-for-1813-velfjord-herred/ )

A new feature with the display program for church books, is that you will get better functions after logging on to the program. Use the same user name and password as in the forums.

Hi Anne-Lise,

I cannot open the Gardar og slekter i Fron 2 : Nord-Fron, that link brings me to the Stavangewebsite but I don't know how to access the article.

Yes, I am sorry. The books are digitized at the National Library of Norway, but can be accessed from Norwegian IP-addresses only. I copied the name and author of the book there. (At nb.no) I also linked to a Minnesota university library, that may have information about where you can find this book in Minnesota.

(The other link, I think was to a local historical society, that cooperated in making the books.)

Best of luck in obtaining the book.

Hi Anne-Lise,

Thank you for explaining the book, so this is the book where I would be able to look up information relating to the family of Torger Olsen Vaterland?  I don't live far from the MN University library and the MN Historical Society.

Take care,

Tina

Yes, that is correct. Nord-Fron is the area where this family lived.

Perfect!  Do you know if Arkivverket is the only website to find family on in Norway?  I have done a lot of research for my father's side in Denmark and have used the Danish Family Search website which was pretty easy to navigate as a American resident.
