HEI to Erik R.

I do really know whom you are, by your name!   Glad for meeting you at the pc. Your grandmother Helga and my mother were cousins. I also have met Helga, when I was a young girl, and she was home visiting relatives at Sørlandet.  I also have a Picture of your mother,  when she was home in Norway. I am just trying to find out about "old relatives, and also those "over there". I just wonder from where your grandfather was, in Norway. I think we just have the date when he was born., but not where? If you can help us a little, it would have been VERY nice.   I think you have a lots of relatives in Norway, on your grandmothers side. Greetings from Magnhild

Wow. I am still shocked that I just happened across this forum by googling Sigurd and Helga Sorensen. This is awesome! It is great to hear from you. I really regret never taking a trip to Norway with Mom (Mildred) to meet family sometime before she passed in 2008. We would love to make a trip over there and meet the Cousins! I have lots of old photos from Norway of unknown people and places. I do have quite a bit of old documents from my Grandparents. My favorite are a few U.S. Customs Service Seamans Identification cards from 1917 and 1918 from Sigurd. I have a copy of his obituary that says he was born in Vestfold, Norway. I also have something handwritten by my Mom that says he was from Rivelsrud, Norway?????  He came to the U.S. in 1914 and lived on Staten Island, New York since 1925. What is the best way to contact you? email? Years ago Mom was doing pretty good staying in touch with Jon and Steiner but we have failed to stay in touch. I had always heard that my G-Grandfather (Hans Nicolai Bugge) on my Mothers side was a Sea Captain and was lost at sea. I heard a whaling ship and then later a cargo ship. I have no information on this. Do you have any details on this??

Erik

Hans (Nicolai) Bugge was listed as Master in the census 1900 - https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01037217000054

In the 1910 census he was listed as Sailor, his residential status was absent and assumed residence was Americahttps://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01036595000111

He travelled to US a few times, links form the emigr. reg. In 1892 and 1901 he was listed as Master, the others as Sailor. Residence provided from 1904 was NY or USA. You may find corresponding passenger list's for his arrivals on FS or Ancestry. I have added information and link for the 1910 travel.

Thank you so much for this information.

This is what I came up with from google translate. Is there a better translation where it says "since nothing has passed from the ship or accounts"

Hans Bugge and Boruf Christiansen in Avig owned Elieser. It will be the last ship built by Elias Danielsen on Holmen. From 1897 Axel Hagestad came in as a new co-owner.
Bugge was the master and perished by a tragic shipwreck. He went on Oct. 14th. 1913 with his ship from Alborg in Denmark destined for Drammen. Since nothing has passed from the ship or accounts, it is assumed that the ship is undergoing. Star it in the church book. The accident was reported by the sheriff to the priest 28, Nov. 1913. He was in the process of transporting cement with "Hillesund" when the accident occurred

I have come across a Lindesnes newspaper article in some old papers from Monday March 31,1982. Kutteren "HILDOSUND" av Svinor. I would upload a photo/scan of the article but I am having difficulty doing so.

Enclosed find two newspaper articles from Fædrelandsvennen 1913.10.31, page 2 and Fædrelandsvennen 1913.11.14, page 3.

First one translates: “The cutter “Hillesund” of Svinør is missing and fears shipwrecked. The ship left Aalborg about 15-16 days ago heading for Drammen with cement. Since then no one has heard from the ship. “Hillesund” was operated by Capt Bugge, brother of local custom inspector Bugge. In addition to the Captain, there were two men on board, a son of custom inspector Bugge and a man from Larvik.”

Second one translates: “A few days ago we reported the cutter “Hillesund” of Svinør, operated by Capt. Bugge, transporting coal from Aalborg, feared lost since there had been no report from the ship after leaving Aalborg. Today, there’s been a month since the ship left Aalborg and still nought has been heard, thus there’s strong reason to believe the ship has sunk. As previously reported the ship had a crew of three men.”

I am planning on contacting the Customs Museum in Oslo to see if they may be able to help but I figured I would post on here also. I would love to have a photo of tolltjenestemann Mathias August Bugge (f. Svinor, Sundet grn 131 'his nr 23' i 1855 - d.1918 Kr. sand) in his Customs Uniform or any other information pertaining to his career.

Thank you!
