Ole Hansen and Marte Olsdatter, Lohre/Lore Farm, Hole, Buskerud

Hello,

Ole Hansen (4th great-grandfather) married Marte Olsdatter on 16 April 1816 in Norderhov, Buskerud. His birth is listed as either 1790 or 1796. Marte is born in 1788 in, most likely, Norderhov.

Ole and Marte are mentioned in the Hole Bygdebok, bind 2: http://www.hole.no/bygdebok/hole%20bind_2_redusert_sikker.pdf(page 436)

I am wondering who the parents and what the birth dates are for Ole Hansen and Marte Olsdatter. Here is the research I've completed so far:

I found 2 Ole Hansen's on the 1801 Census in Hole:

1. born 1791, living at Hovind Farm, parents are Hans Olsen & Maria Andersdatter

2. born 1793, living at Solberg Farm, parents are Hans Olsen & Dorte Poulsdatter

However, with Lore farm being located on the border between Norderhov and Hole, he could also be from Norderhov.

As for Marte, I believe this is her but there are other Marte's listed.

1. baptized 13 July 1788 in Norderhov, Buskerud to Ole Olsen Wager and Else Maria Gulbrandsdatter

(Wager Farm is listed as a Farm name of her children's sponsors)

Thank you for any help. If I can provide any additional clarification, please let me know.

Heather

Hello,

Marte is not the daughter of Ole Olsen Wager and Else Marie Gulbrandsdatter,  - she married Ole Christensen Dæhli (Ringerikske slekter III, by A. Lagesen).

I am a bit confused about the name of their first son, Mads, baptized in July 1816.  Why not Hans, after his father?  Their second son got the name Hans (1822),

and in 1828 another son called Mads (maybe the first Mads had died).  The name Mads may be important to the family - a brother or uncle of Ole or Marthe?

Their daughter Oline (1832) was probably named after her father (no more sons), and I have noticed these other girls:  Randi (1819), Elen Marie (1825) and Maren Carine (1835).

Maybe they were named after their mothers????

When Ole died (drowned) in 1836, his age was 46 years (born about 1790), but he was only 20 i 1816, so, as you also write, he´s born between 1790 - 1796.

They moved to Lohre-eie, dated May 29th 1816.  Ole Hansen Øren (25) an wife Marte Olsdtr. Hønenfos (24 years). Nr. 21 and 22.

Yet another age on both of them, but maybe Øren/Auren can tell us something,

This may be Ole and his family at Øren (Auren) in 1801 (024 - 028).  Rønnaug is the name of his mother and she's a widow.

You find both a Sara (Wager) and a Jon (Hansen Wager/Schøyen-eie) among the sponsors of Ole/Marthes children.  Siblings of Ole?

Hello Astrid,

Thank you for the quick response and the research help! The Ole Hansen you found certainly seems like a good candidate. I will see what else I can find on that family to try and link them to my family. However, it does seem very likely as both Sara and Jon are listed as sponsors at Ole and Marta's children's baptisms and they are listed as siblings to Ole on the 1801 census.

You bring up a good point as to why Ole and Marte named their first son Mads. The first son Mads died in 1827 and my 3rd great-grandfather is the Mads that was born 18 June1828 (and immigrated to the USA in 1853). Perhaps, as you mention, Mads is named after an uncle or brother? It seemed very odd to me that it didn't follow a more "typical" naming pattern.

As for Marta, thank you for confirming that the Marte Olsdatter Wager is not her. However, I found another potential - Marta Olsdatter (born 1791) living in Hønen in 1801 with her father Ole Erichsen, step mother Kari Halvorsdatter and sister Elen Maria Olsdatter.

The reason there may be some truth to this family is because the sister is name Elen Maria, which she named her daughter born in 1824. However, I am not sure if the Farm Hønen is the same as Hønenfos which is listed on the document listed above from 1816? I am not very familiar with this area of Norway, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you again. If you have any other suggestions or advice, please let me know.

Marte Olsdatter was baptized on April 10th 1791.  Parents: Ole Ericsen and Mari Xstophersdt. (Christophersdt.).  Mari must have died when Marte was very young, buth the Church-Books of Norderhov from that period is VERY difficult to read....

Back to Ole Hansen and his siblings:

he also had to sisters named Randi  ( July 1782 and Feb. 1786), but maybe they both died? I find no trace of her in 1801.  His oldest daughter was named Randi.

Hønen Farm and Hønefoss (town status in 1852) is a long story, but more or less the same area.  You can google Hønefoss and read more: Hønefoss in the center of the municipality of Ringerike, quote from wikipedia.

The widow Marte Olsdatter Lohre-eie died 31.12.1840 (nr. 1, 1841), 55 years old.  Now we´re back to a birth ca. 1786/87

but then again a difference of 5 years is not unusual....

Anyway, I noticed that Elen Marie immigrated to America i 1853 and 5 years later, in 1858, Oline and Maren Karine also went over there,

Yes, all of their children immigrated to America except the oldest Randi who married Peder Andersen in Norderhov on 27 December 1840. They either settled in Decorah, Iowa or Freeborn County, Minnesota. I have not been able to find any marriage records for Maren Karine but I did find one for Oline in Iowa a year after she arrived. I am thinking Maren Karine may have died on the trip over or just after arrival.

Thank you for finding Marte's death record. I found another Ole Hansen who may fit the bill:

Born approximately 1792, his parents are Hans Jensen and Eli Madsdatter... which could then explain why he named his first son Mads (in honor of his grandfather? Is that common?). Sister Olia and brother Jens living at Hønen farm. Could he have been a servant at Auren Farm when he immigrated to Lohre Farm in Hole? That would then make sense how Ole met Marte - they both came from the same farm?

Ole was christ. in March 1792.  Parents Hans Jensen Hønefossen and Eli Madsdatter.

His parents got married in HOLE on Dec. 8th 1791:  bachelor and soldier Hans Jensen Westeren (farm in Norderhov, I think), and maid Eli Madsdatter Pommern (cottage/smallholding at Stein farm in Hole).

They moved to Norderhov after their marriage.

Yes, you have two "good Ole Hansen-candidates"....  Ole Hansen is a very, very common name.  Maybe the probate records can give you an answer,
