Norderhov birth question

The Norderhov Kirkebøker  ministerialbok, nr 10 1837 - 1847, s134 lists the birth of Christian Johansen,

born 6 Dec. ca 1845.  Parents Johan Christiansen Hag_eie og Elizabeh Petersd.  Can a birth be found

for Elizabeth?   There is an Elizabeth Mary listed as being 66 yrs. old on the Minnesota census of 1875 under Christian Tanberg's

family.  Possibly this would make her birth in 1809.  Am wondering if this is the same woman as Christian's mother and

when she might have emigrated to America.   Also any clues why the Tanberg name was used in America?

Any help appreciated ; thank you.

Hi Carla,

This is the family in the 1865 census:

https://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01038084004900

It shows that Elizabeth was born in the parish of Hole in c1812.

I had a quick look on familysearch but couldn't find anything obvious.

Perhaps a better search in Hole might be useful.

Regards,

Chris.

Hi Carla,

Just a follow up question.

Are you able to provide the link to the 1845 birth in Norderhov?

I cannot find any Christian Johansen with the details you mentioned.

And you will notice the 1865 census does not mention a son Christian for that family (20 yr old).

How sure are you these are the correct parents for the Christian you are researching?

Chris.

I did follow your hint Chris to do a search in church book of Hole and I feel confident that the following is the marriage of parents to Christen born 6 Dec 1845.

3 June 1842 widower Johan Christensen from Klavaasen, 35 years old was married in Norderhov church to widow Lisbeth Pedersdatter from Fjeldstad in Hole, 29 years old - couple # 30. Bride's father given as Peder Olsen so this is most probably same Lisbet who was born in 1813, christened in Hole church 11 Apr 1813. Father given as Peder Olsen Fjelstad and mother Berthe Johansdatter.

Hi again Carla,

Elisabeth Pedersdatter, a farmers wife from Klavaasen died 4 June 1873, 58 years old and was buried 11 June same year from Norderhov church. She left her husband Johan Christensen a widower - # 54. So the Elizabeth Mary listed as being 66 yrs. old on the Minnesota census of 1875 under Christian Tanberg's family was definitely not the mother of Christian.

In my first paragraph, I listed the farm name as Hag?eie at the birth of Christian.   Today I found a note on Christian's confirmation

on  June 19 1859.  Birth  6 Dec. 1844 Hagaeie  Parents Johan Christianson and Elizabeth Pedersdatter.  Since Christian is not listed on

the 1865 census above that Chris mentioned, could the census for this Haga farm be found?   I admit I am not good at finding the

censuses since things have been updated on this site!  Sorry....CT

Probably 'your' Christian in Census 1865 - skredder i.e. taylor seems to be a keyword up until he emigrates in 1868.

What about the attached family tree of Christian J. Tanberg - does any of the names and familiy connections ring a bell and seems familiar ?

Thanks again,

I recently renewed my subscription  to this site, I believe.   If I am allowed to look at this site , maybe I'll find some unanswered questions.

I have visited the grave sites of the family of Christian and his two wives.   The two wives were sisters and a third sister came to America

to the same area of MN.   She has disappeared and does not appear on records so I assume she died young.  Her name was Anne Mathea

married to Andreas Martinson.  Greetings from Otter Tail county where I grew up in a township named Norwegian Grove next to a lake named

Olaf.  Our church is getting ready to prepare our 56th annual Syttende Mai Norwegian dinner.  We leave out the lutefisk but do serve rommegrot,

lefse, sweet soup, flatbread with the meatballs and gravy, etc..  And years ago, the King of Norway stopped at my gt., gt. grandparents in Sandsvær,

spread a cloth and had lunch.  Carla Kittelson Tweeton

Hi again, Carla

Your initial query, if Elizabeth Mary listed as being 66 yrs. old on the Minnesota census of 1875 could have been Christian's mother, has been sorted out as a negative. In order to shed some light on your second query, I've taken a closer look at church records, censuses, register of mortgages and more - so far with no luck - to try to figure out what the connection might have been between Christen Johansen/Tandberg and the farm Tandberg in Norderhov parish of Buskerud county that led him to take Tanberg as family name in US. In this process I came across the christening records for his wifes, sisters Johanne and Karen Andersdatter.  The dates differ somewhat compared to the family tree shown above: Johanne, born 22 Jan 1844, was the elder sister of Karen, born 2 March 1846 and her given name was Karen, not Karen Dorthea. Both in 1844 and 1846 their parents were given as Anders Jonassen Dahl and Anne Marie Nilsdatter.

Carla,

I finally found Christen Tanberg in the Minnesota census 1880. When asking for the names, the family-name apparently was interpreted by the enumerator as Tonber but transcribed into Touber in the digitalization process.

He was living at Rothsay in Wilkin county of Minnesota along with his (second) wife Jennie  and the children were John at 12, Mary at 10, both born in Norway, then Caroline at 8, Annie at 6, Hannah at 4, Carl at 1, all born in Minnesota. In addition Johanne/Jennie's son Nicolay/Nick at 5 and Mary Anna, grandmother at 60, the two latter born in Norway.

United States Census, 1880; https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GYBN-97XJ?cc=1417683&wc=QZ2W-TJH%3A1589406338%2C1589407778%2C1589407800%2C1589394830

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GYBN-97XJ?mode=g&i=1&cc=1417683

So this grandmother Mary Anna must have been Christian Tanberg's mother-in-law, i.e. mother of both his deceased wife Karen and his second wife Johanne/Jennie. In spite of the fact that both age and names differ between the Elizabeth Mary that you points to in Minnesota census 1875 and this Mary Anna from census 1880, it is my opinion that these are the same person.

The Norway emigration records show that the couple Anders Jonassen at 63 and Anne M. Nilsdatter at 61 of Norderhov both travelled from Norway 20 Jun 1873

Emigranter fra Oslo 1867-1930 http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=EMIOSLO

From the Norderhov church records same couple noted moving out of the parish, emigrating to America, # 79 + 80

When christened in Norderhov church 1 Mar 1812, Anne Maria's parents were named Niels Andersen Follum and Joran Pedersd. (second from top)

Anders Jonassen Dahl (27) and Anne Maria Nilsdatter (26) were married in Norderhov church 14 august 1837, couple # 25

SAKO, Norderhov kirkebøker, F/Fa/L0009: Ministerialbok nr. 9, 1819-1837, s. 914-915

At Minnesota census 1885 no grandmother is staying with Christen Tanberg and family (fam # 19) in Manston, Wilkin county, but one Maria Nelson aged 73, born in Norway is living by herself (fam # 12) in Manston.

Minnesota State Census, 1885; https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-68L3-YSV?cc=1503044&wc=M8S1-ZWT%3A66270401%2C66301201

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-68L3-YSV?cc=1503044

Finding the death record of Mary Anna Tanberg/Maria Nelson in Minnesota 1880-1900 would probably finally determine if she indeed was Christen Tanberg's mother-in-law.

Unfortunately, none of the above still doesn't give a clue to why Tanberg was chosen as family-name !

Thank you for helping again.  I am going to ponder all you have written and then hope to make a trip to the Court House

here in Fergus Falls (Otter Tail   county) and to Breckenridge MN where the Wilkin county Courthouse is located.  I have visited the Hamar

Cemetery at Rothsay where Anders Jonassen, his daughter Karen and her daughter are buried.  It is a 4 plot so perhaps Anders wife is

buried there also.  The stone is very hard to read.  The last sister of Johanna and Karen - Anne Mathea is still a mystery.   I have found

a man who may have been her husband who married a widow from a neighboring town. They had both been married before.  Then he

dies and the widow marries a third time.   As to Anne Mathea, who must have died young, I am going to check records of the State

Hospital (now closed) and the Poor Farm Cemetery.  TB patients were sent to the St. Hospital so that's a possibility or guess.  The

cemetery at the Regional Treatment  (St. Hosp.) has about 3000 persons buried there.  It is a marvelous complex of buildings if

you wish to 'Google' it.  In Fergus Falls (Otter Tail County.  Carla

Perhaps Tandberg was a larger farm and the family took that name in America.  My family did that.   CT

Hi Carla,

I think you may be on to something. Christen Tanberg's in-laws family had been living at Dahl, a small farm leased from the Norderhov parsonage/rectory (Land # 42), for generations. It so happens that the farm Tanberg (Land # 38) was/is situated just uphill from the Norderhov church and is considered to have been one of the more influential properties, if not the most influential farm in the Norderhov parish for many hundreds of years - according to some the history of farm Tanberg/Thornberg (derived from latin 'mons spinae') starts before 1233.

So the reason for Christen Tanberg to  start using Tanberg as family name once in US, could simply have been that he wanted the local well known historical name from the district he came from in Norway to live on in America. As you well know, many Norwegian emigrants ended up with a vast variety of different family names after arriving in US. Especially given the close neighborhood in Norderhov parish between the farm Tanberg and Dahl under Norderhov parsonage this, in my opinion, is a very plausible explanation why Christen started naming himself Tanberg.

Hurra for 17 mai ! !

I am still having trouble with all the little ? things to press or not press .....but thanks so much for all your digging.  The whole Tanberg family in

Norway and the US is quite interesting and several puzzles have been answered.   I am going today to see if Anna Mary or Mary Anna has a

death record in our CT. House.

About 3-4 years ago my son and daughter-in-law were in Norway to celebrate Syttende Mai.  She was born this day and wanted to celebrate it

in Norway; they had a wonderful time and did a lot of hiking.  They did spend $700 on a meal one night which I could hardly believe; otherwise

they are very frugal people!

Have a great day!

Carla,

I believe that my Ancestry tree is the one shown in the screen-shot above.  It is my understanding that Tanberg was the name of the farm in Norway and that they took that name when immigrating. I have found this to be the case in many of my Norwegian and Scandinavian ancestors (there are even instances of some siblings using farm names and others using patronymic). So, it likely was just a personal preference. I remember reading at one point that the majority of Norwegians chose the farm name as their permanent surname vs using their patronymic surname.

I myself have been working through some discrepancies in family history and trying to locate the records on this site.  I am descended from Andrew C Tanberg, whom I have come to realize was actually Christen's step-son (which was never notated in family history).  I look forward to browsing the forums and digging through records here.
