A crafts tool made in Norway with the initials OHD means Halvorsdatter. But made in Wisconsin with the initials can be of sentimental reasons, nostalgic. Anyway, those Olene born in Norway 1846+/- with father Halvorson, is quite a list of matches. It's up to Susan if you whish to cooperate in examining each and everyone of these candidates.

I started thinking that if Olia's father's name was Halvor Halvorsen, then both the Halvorsen and Halvorsdatter would make sense. I found one family that arrived in 1850. http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_list.asp?jo=13&ps=11987

18 Halvor Halvorsen 36  m
ID 1198819 Alet Jørgesndatter 15
ID 1198920 Ane Halvorsdatter 14
ID 1199021 Groe Halvorsdatter* 15
ID 1199122 Dagni Halvorsdatter* 10
ID 1199223 Halvor Halvorsen
ID 1199324 Sigrid Halvorsdatter*
ID 1199425 Knud Halvorsen*

I also found them in the 1850 census in Dane, Wisconsin. The age of Alet Jorgesndatter seems more accurate in the census (making her the same age as Halvor, rather than 1/2 his age). https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-67P5-QQ?i=5&cc=1401638

It is a bit of a stretch, but if Olia was a nickname for Sigrid or Segre. It seems slightly possible.

The sponsors attending the baptism of Oleas children is an unexplored source of information. A brother, sister or in-laws of Olea would be valuable now.

Hvordan har du funnet frem til disse personene, som er nesten skjult i kildene. Og viktigere: på hvilken måte kan man bevise om det er riktig Olea. Din nye kandidat er et spennende forslag.

So, if this is the wanted family, they changed surname during the 1850s to Halvorsen from previously Erlendson or Ellingson. Sponsor named Olia Halvorsdatter for niece Olia Nilsdatter Rust b 1865, is our first discovery of a written source using HalvorsDATTER.

These results are consistent with known facts, my poor user skills with Ancestry prevents me from contributing with additional lookups.

To avoid us doing the same thing, I'm trying to check up the the Norwegian background of this family. So far I've found some information. I tried to find their emigration record, but have found out that it may have been lost in a fire in 1945. I'm trying to find a way around this problem. More later.

I find this family at the small Midtre Rust Farm, farm no. 113/4, Bruflat Parish, Etnedal, Valdres, Oppland, Norway. They are mentioned in the local history book Valdres bygdebok part 1, vol. B,  page 80: https://www.nb.no/nbsok/nb/dd90c267a0c877de51ebb259d1b62c63?index=11#83

It reads:

Sitat

Halvor Ellenson (born 1805) and Olea Olsdatter (born 1803) bought Midtre Rust in 1844. Olea was a sister of Nils Olsson. Their children were: Margit (born 1826), Ingeborg (born 1828), Ole (born 1830), Ellen (born 1833), Ragnhild (born 1835), Ingebjørg (born 1838), Nils (born 1841) and Guri (born 1845). The Family stayed at Midte Rust for just 10 years.

Gudbrand Olsson (born 1819) from Brenn (under Hiei) and Kari Monsdatter (born 1826) bought the farm in 1854.

Nils Olsson was the prevous farmer of Midtre Rust.

Even though the vaccination record from December 1845 also shows a daughter Olea, I've been unable to find her baptism record. The stated age, 2 1/2 years, indicates that she was born in 1843. This corresponds With her census record from 1860, see #59 (above).

However, I find that the Church record has been partly damaged. This is a possible explanation why I've been unable to find her. My conclusion is that the most likely explanation is she actually was born into this family in 1843, and that her baptism has been left out of the records, either due to the partial damage or because she was baptized at home, and then the parents "forgot" to have her baptism confirmed in the Church. This happened to one of my ancestors, and was commented in a note when he married.

The son named Tollev (age 12 1/4) in the vaccination record has to be Ellen born in 1833. This is partly confirmed by his conformation record from 27 June1848 (#32): https://media.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070207620234

This shows that the Family still lived at Rust in 1848, and the the emigration most likely took place between the summer of 1848 and 1850.

The Church records of Sør-Aurdal as a unified clerical district ends in June 1849. None of them registered as moving out of Sør-Aurdal until then.

In 1849 each parish got their own record. Unfortunately the separate Church records of Bruflat Parish 1849-1876 was destroyed in 1945. Bruflat and another parish named Nord-Etnedal formed the Municipality of Etnedal in 1894: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etnedal

A hypothesis: The river that starts in Etnedal mouths in Drammen. Is it possible that is is the correct family we have found in the passenger list of the bark Freya from 1850, and that some of the names and ages have been mixed up? http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_list.asp?jo=640&ps=2658

#76 Halvor Erlandsen, 27

#77 Olivia Olsdotter. 17

#78 Ole Halvorsen, 40

#79 Ellen do, 36

#80 Niels do, 12

#81 Ragnhild do, 10

#82 Ingeborg do, 9

#83 Olivia do, 8

#84 Guri do, 5

#85 Christian do, 16

#76 and 77 are the parents, #78-84 are their known children, except from their daughter Marit (born in 1826). Both the Oleas have becone Olivia! Among the other passengers I find the surname Granum, which is a farm name from Etnedal. And among the others given names and patronymics there are several names corresponding with this family, suggesting that they were neighbors and possible relatives.

If this is correct, the only problem left is who Christian was, if he belonged tho this family. My guess is that he didn't, but was someone who travelled with them without being a part of the family. Perhaps a not very distant relative? In the 1860 census record in #59 we find a Christena Oleson, 18, living with this family in Wisconsin. My guess is that they are identical.

Yes, I suppose so!

I just found another bit of information supporting this; the Granums I mentioned in #68 seems to be the sons of Olea Olsdatter Rust's sister Kjersti!

When I look at Olea's supposed 1870 US Census record (#26), I notice that the names of those family members in the family she lived with, stated to have been born in Norway, are identical with person #22, 25 and 26 on the 1850 Freya passenger list. This family came from the farm next to the Blåflat Farm, the childhood home of Olea's father!
