American needs help - direction

My great grandfather was Johan Peter Gundersen of Honenfoss. I have found the following records about him and his parents in Norway. He went to sea and became a sailor. I last found records in 1876 for his confirmation in Buskerud fylke, Hønefoss, Nordre Deel; Farm #98. Then I find him in the United States in 1895. After he settled in the US, he carved three sailing ships (not steamships) which the family believed he might have sailed on as a seaman. They are the Pearle, Ocean Queen, and the Cape Horn. The models are/were 2 feet to 3 feet in length and two are still in the family.

I would like to find if there are any records of my great grandfather, John Peter Gundersen as a sailor. I have tried looking at some of the index's/records but think they are divided into "area's" of Norway and am not sure which are the likely ones if he left home after his confirmation and "went to sea". Any help would be very much appreciated.
