Thank you.

We prefere links so that we will be able to turn pages and compare handwriting when i doubt.

Also you will attract the attention of those with the in-depth knowledge if you write the name of the place in the heading (in this case Setesdal.)

I assumed the questions/comments were;

"have anyone seen these marks before?"

"does anyone know to whom these bumerker belonged?"

As for me, I found it interesting and wanted to learn more about it.  I hoped someone had the knowledge to shed some light on bumerker in general, but these in particular since we are able to see them in context.

But I'm sure Murray would like to answer this himself.

Hello,

that is correct Lene, i'm curious to whom these bumerke belong to.
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/18171/12

There are many pages in this deed registry that contain bumerke.
These records are from 1692 to 1697

I'm also wondering if there are similar records for the 1700s & 1800s that contain bumerke for the Hylestad area.

Thanks

- yes, of course. Bumerke were commonly used for signature in the 15-, 16- and 1700s.

- in most cases the name is mentioned in the document.

Then you start by searching the internet for information... - at least as a Norwegian, you can find a lot of infomation.

I do not know this area. However, I expect that bumerke can be found at least during the 1700s.

The particular entry shows three bumerke and (as it is a copy) denotes (by "LS") that wax impressions of five seals were found on the original.

The document is issued by "Tollef Salfvessøn Boende fra Thved vdj oustad

Sogen og Raabiugdelaugitz fogderj, .."  (Line 1-2) who have signed with "mit sedvanlige boumærche" (Line 9 from end).

In addition,  "laugrettesmend, nemblig Knud

Asslachssen Sørndall, Aamund Hunstenssen ibidm., Gumuch??

og Thorgius Hegland, sampt Orm og Salfve Moy" signs to confirm the deed.

It is however, not obvious in which sequence the bumerke/seals are shown.

Comparing signatures to other documents can reveal this. The "lagrettemenn" was in service for a period, and can

most likely be found as withnesses for other documents.

Moreover, at some documents, the name of the owner is written to each bumerke.

If I am trying to find bumerke for my ancestors, where do you suggest I look?
Doesn't appear that my relatives in Norway know or have that information.
I do have information of my ancestors like their names and the towns they lived in going back to the 1500s.
The only bumerker I've seen for my family with for a great great great uncle. It was in one of the Valle Kommune books.
Aside from that I've searched and have had zero luck. Do you think it is kinda a lost cause?

I have found bumerker in chrurch books, but more often in Court Journals  (TIngbøker) andAccount books for bailiffs (Futerekneskap). Also in other taxlists and imortgage books (pantebøker)bumerkes may be used. But you should need a good aprt of luck to find your ancestors with a bumerke.

Would you be able to search one relative of mine?

Knut Tarjeisson Helle
born in 1827, died in 1881
Lived in Hylestad. Wife was Aashild Rysstad born in 1845.

He lived in Rysstadmo .... GNR 68, BNR 25 I believe.

Knut's father was Tarjei Knutsson Uppstad (1781-1860)

I have had zero success searching up this info as I don't speak Norwegian.

If you are able to help that would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I have collected bumerke inn Vefsn (Nordland), in the work with the lokal Bygdebok. We have found some hundred, mostly from the eightteenth century (1700-1799).  After that people wrote their names instead.

I dont know other districts.
