Help finding information on great grandmother

Hello,

I'm looking for information about my great grandmother.  She emigrated to the US when she was around 18.  Here name was Anne Mourad.

She was born on March 25, 1850 on Helgoya Island on the Mjosa river.  She takes her name from a farm on Helgoya Island.  I have learned that her name in Norway was Anne Hansdatter.  I'm trying to get more information on her for an upcoming trip to Norway.  I'm especially interested in learning more about her parents and siblings.  A few years back, someone sent me a link on this website where her name was found on the 1865 census, but the link in no longer valid.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Sarah McKasson

This is may be the confirmation record for Anne Hansdatter:

Hedmark county, Nes, Helgøya, Baldishol in Nes, Parish register (official) no. 4 (1852-1886), Confirmation 1864, Page 198

Thank you all so much for you help. I’m having trouble understanding what these documents mean, so any help with translation would be much appreciated.

Also, I had no idea anyone had responded to my post - just happened to check today. Is there some way to get notified that someone posted to my thread?

And one last question, I am interested is getting some profession help with my research. Do any of you know of a genealogist in Norway that I can contact?

I’m so grateful for yourr help.  My email address is smckasson4@gmail.com

Hi Jon,

I'm interested in knowing her father's and mother's names and dates of birth and death.  Also, any sibling that she had and their names, birth/death.

I'm also curious about her name - Hansdatter.  Someone told me once that many  Norwegian folks didn't have last names.  They were known by who their father was.  So Anne was Hans' daughter?  When she arrived in Minnesota, she became Anne Mourad, which someone else told me was the name of the farm on the island of Helgoya.  I guess that was commonly done in the 1800s?

I would love to find the names of her grandparents, but I don't even know how to begin that search.  Not knowing the language is a definite challenge when I try to figure out what each line says on the census forms, confirmation, etc.

Thanks so much for responding.  My sister and I are taking a trip to Norway June 2020 and plan on going to Helgoya island - really looking forward to seeing where my Great grandmother was born:)

This is exactly the case. Until 1923 family names (like we know them in the U.S.) were not used in Norway except among some wealthy or urban families. The vast majority of rural Norwegians used a system of "patronyms", where -sen or -son meant "son of" and -dotter or -datter meant "daughter of". Thus, yes, Anne Hansdatter was Anne, daughter of Hans, while her stepfather Ole Syversen was Ole, son of Syver. Because there could be duplications (for example, there were lots of Ole Jonsens around, so you needed to distinguish them), people were often known by the farm they lived on (in Norway, each farm has its own name). Thus, Ole Syversen Mauro (the name on his emigration record) means he was Ole the son of Syver, living at Mauro farm (that farm name was also spelled Mauerud). In Norway, the farm name was not permanent - you would get a different farm name whenever you moved. When Norwegians emigrated to the U.S., they then needed to adopt a family name (which would be permanent and inherited down the male line). They usually did one of two things - either adopt the patronym of the immigrant as a permanent family name, or else the farm name they had just before emigrating. In the case of your ancestor, she chose the farm name, which is how she became Anne Mourad.

Hi Sarah, before spending money on professional help, give this forum some time to help you. I doubt you can find professional help better than the one you can find for free here. Just specify what you are looking for.

The way to do this is to work backwards through the church books.

Let's first look at the confirmation record (in post #3 above). This is from Nes clerical district, which includes Helgøya parish. If you click on the link and look at the first handwritten line (entry #47), you will see that it says (in translation): 9 October [1864], Anne Hansdtr [this is shorthand for Hansdatter], born 25/3 50 [note that, in Europe, day comes before month, so this is 25th of March 1850], place of birth Trygestad Prgld [Prgld is short for Prestegjeld, which means clerical district - a group of parishes sharing the same priest/minister], parents Hans Andersen and Ragnhild Kristensdtr, grade "very good" [i.e., she had been a very good student in her confirmation lessons], vaccinated 16/10 50 [=16th of October 1850]

Now let's look at her birth record (in post #4 above). This is from the parish book for Trøgstad clerical district [spelled Trygestad in the confirmation record above], which is in Østfold county, about 25 miles southeast of Oslo (whereas Helgøya is about 60 miles north of Oslo). If you click on the link and look at entry 27, you will see that it says (in translation): born 25 March [1850], baptised 7 April [1850], name Anne, legitimate [i.e., her parents were married to each other], parents Hans Andersen and Ragnild Kristens. [i.e., Kristensdatter] of Rødholen farm. It then gives the names of the four godparents.

Now to the census record (in post #5 above). This census record was taken at Mauerud øvre [upper Mauerud] farm in 1865. It shows Ole Syversen (age 29, born in Ringsaker) as the head of household; he's a farmer who owns his own farm [that is, not a tenant farmer]. Then we have Ragnhild Kristensdatter (age 48, born in Askim), his wife. And then we have two children in the household: Maren Hansdatter (age 23, born in Trygstad) and Anne Hansdatter (age 15, born in Trygstad), who are both marked as her (rather than their) children. Thus, both Maren and Anne were the daughters of Ragnhild Kristensdatter with her first husband Hans Andersen, and Ole Syversen is their stepfather.

The emigration record (in post #6 above) is from Nes clerical district (again, the clerical district that includes Helgøya parish). If you look at entries 45-48, you will see that on 26 April 1869 farmer Ole Syversen Maurud (age 43), his wife Ragnild Christensdatter (age 60), and daughters Maren Hansdatter (age 26) and Anne Hansdatter (age 19) announced to the local authorities that they were leaving for America.

Finally, look at the other emigration record (in post #7 above). This is from the Oslo emigration office (i.e., on their way from Helgøya to America). If you click on this link, you will see it saying that farmer Ole Syversen  Mauro, age 32, from Næs [=Nes], left Oslo on 1 May 1869 for Chicago. There are a couple of further links. https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/9/og00000000397652 shows Randi Kristensdatter, age 50, his wife; https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/9/og00000000397653 shows Maren, age 26, and https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/9/og00000000397654 shows Anne, age 19, all on the same voyage.

So, the information we have is: Anne Hansdatter was the daughter of Hans Andersen and Ragnhild/Ragnild/Randi Kristensdatter, born 1850 at Rødholen in Trøgstad clerical district. Hans was already dead by 1865. Ragnhild was born in Askim clerical district about 1817 (from 1865 census) to 1819 (from Oslo emigration record). She and Hans had at least one other daughter, Maren, born in Trygstad around 1842 (from 1865 census) to 1843 (from emigration records).

If there are any other siblings (either who died in infancy or had moved out by 1865), they would probably be in the Trøgstad birth registers of the 1840s and 1850s. We should also look for the marriage of Hans Andersen and Ragnhild Kristensdatter, either in Trøgstad or Askim (which is right next to Trøgstad in Østfold county) sometime before 1843. The marriage record may then tell us how old they were and who their parents were.

So Helgøya is where she was living (with her mother, sister, and stepfather) just before she emigrated - which is certainly one important part in her history. But she was born at Rødholen in Trøgstad, just east of the village of Skjønhaug. For where this is, see this nifty Norwegian map (there are + and - buttons in the upper right-hand corner to zoom in and out): https://norgeskart.no/#!?project=seeiendom&layers=1002,1015&zoom=11&lat=6616749.69&lon=293866.97&markerLat=6616760.263414296&markerLon=295189.2354918775&panel=searchOptionsPanel&sok=Rødholen

Also, any sibling that she had and their names, birth/death.

Siblings of Anne Hansdatter, found from familysearch.org's indexing of the Trøgstad birth registers:

1) Maren and 2) Johanne [twins], born 4 July 1842 to Hans Andersen and Ragnild Kristensdt. [=Kristensdatter] at Rødholen, Trøgstad, and baptised 7 August 1842 - see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061019020081, right-hand side, very bottom, entry 35+36

3) Johan, born 7 July 1844 to Hans Andersen and Ragnild Kristensdtr at Rødholen, Trøgstad, and baptised 21 July 1844 - see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061019020088, left-hand side, second-from-bottom, entry 24

As already discussed above, Maren emigrated in 1869 to America along with her sister Anne and their mother and step-father, so her death record needs to be looked for in America.

Johanne Hansdatter of Rødholen died as an infant on 29 May 1843 and was buried 5 June 1843 - see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061019020046, right-hand side, entry 23

As for Johan, in 1855 farmer Hans Andersen (age 50), his wife Ragnil Christensdatter (age 37), and their children Maren (age 12 1/2), Johan (age 10 1/2), and Anne (age 5) of Rødholen left Trøgstad for Sævesind in Vestre Toten clerical district - see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20060316020100, right-hand side, entries 2 to 6 (Sævesind is today's Sivesin - this is about 12 miles (as the crow flies) south-southwest of Helgøya). Johan Hansen, born at Røholen in Trygstad, was confirmed 1859 in Vestre Toten - see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/279/pk00000000882664

As to the father, Hans Andersen: we know (see previous entry) that he left Rødholen in Trøgstad for Sivesin in Vestre Toten in 1855. This is where he died: see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070205610422, left-hand side, entry 7. It reads: died 5 Feb [1858], buried 21 Feb [1858], farmer Hans Andersen of Sivesind, age 49. There is an entry to the right giving the circumstances of his death, which I unfortunately can't make out.

Thus, Hans Andersen was born around 1805 (based on age 50 in the 1855 record of his move) to 1809 (based on age 49 at death in 1858).

Found the marriage of Hans Andersen and Ragnhild Christensdatter: see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061019030273, right-hand side, entry 11. This is from the parish book for Askim clerical district in Østfold county (if groom and bride were from different clerical districts, it was common for the marriage to take place in the bride's parish. This is the case here, where he was from Trøgstad and she was from Askim).

It reads, in translation: groom: widower Hans Andersen of Rødholen in Trøgstad, farmer, age 36 1/4; bride: maiden Ragnild Christensdr [=Christensdatter] of Olberg [in Askim], age 23 1/2; witnesses Christen Olberg [presumably her father] and Matthis Dohlies; date 16 November 1841; ceremony in the church. There is an annotation at the very far right, which I believe means that the probate for Hans Andersen's first wife (and whatever children they may have had) closed 7 February 1840.

From this entry it seems likely Hans Andersen was born in 1805 and Ragnild Christensdatter was born in 1818.

Birth record for Ragnild Christensdatter: see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061019030099, right-hand side, entry 2. This is also from Askim clerical district. It reads, in translation: born 29 January 1818; name Rangnild Christensd. Olberg, farmer's daughter; baptised 1 February 1818 in the church; parents Christen Iversen Olberg and Marthe Andersdatter, farming folk; - and then it gives the names of 5 godparents.

For the location of Olberg, see https://norgeskart.no/#!?project=seeiendom&layers=1002,1015&zoom=11&lat=6616533.51&lon=288875.36&markerLat=6614259.209988919&markerLon=285162.44132895366&panel=searchOptionsPanel&sok=Olberg. It is about 6-7 miles west of Rødholen.

Her parents' marriage record: see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061019020509, right-hand side, fourth entry (from Askim clerical district). It reads, in translation: 26 January 1812, engagement of widower Christen Iversen Olberg and maiden Marthe Andersdatter Onstad; witnesses Niels Hansen Lunder and Matthis Andersen Onstad. [on the right:] married 16 March 1812.

Death record for Ragnild Christensdatter's father: see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061019030221, left-hand side, entry 8 (from Askim clerical district). It reads, in translation: died 19 July 1842, buried 26 July 1842, Christen Iversen, farmer at Olberg, age 70. Annotation at right says he died from a fall [I can't quite make out what he fell from].

Death record for Christen Iversen's first wife: see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061019020481, right-hand side, sixth entry from top (from Askim clerical district). It reads: 1811, April 21, Rangnild Olsdatter Olberg, of tuberculosis, age 37 years and 4 months. That this was Christen Iversen's wife is evident from a birth record (see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061019020458, left-hand side, third entry from bottom), in which, on 1 January 1807, a child of Christen Iversen Olberg and Rangnild Olsdatter is baptised in the name of Iver.

1801 census record for Christen Iversen and his first wife Rangnild Olsdatter is from Langenæs Nordre in Eidsberg clerical district (https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01058203000364). It shows Christen Iversen at age 28 and Ragnild Olsdatter at age 26 (ages agree with those from their death records).

This information allows us to find the baptismal record for Christen Iversen in the parish book for Eidsberg clerical district: see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061019040150, left-hand side, entry 39. It reads, in translation: at Eidsberg on mid-Lent Sunday 1772 [that is, 29 March 1772], baptised Christen, father Iver Hansen Langenes Nordre, mother Mari Nilsdatter.

To summarize: Anne Hansdatter's mother's father was Christen Iversen, born 1772 (baptised 29 March 1772) at Langenes in Eidsberg, living there in 1801, moved to Olberg in Askim by 1807, first wife died 1811, re-married to Marthe Andersdatter Onstad 16 March 1812, and died at Olberg 19 July 1842.

As to Marthe Andersdatter Onstad, Ragnhild Christensdatter's mother: in the 1801 census, we have both Marthe Andersdatter, age 8, and brother Matthis Andersen (who was witness at her wedding) at Onstad, children of Anders Olsen and Mari Jensdatter (see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01058202000087).

This allows us to find the baptismal record for her in the parish book for Askim clerical district: see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061019020438, right-hand side, 3rd entry. It reads, in translation: 3rd Sunday of Advent, 16 December 1792, [baptised] Anders Olsen and Mari Jensdatter Onstad's daughter Marthe (godparents are then listed).

So she was about 19 when, on 16 March 1812, she married a 40-year-old widower.

As to Anne Hansdatter's father Hans Andersen: his baptismal record is at https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/7477/69 (left-hand side, entry for May 23). This is in Trøgstad clerical district and reads, in translation: May 23 [1805] [baptised] Anders Christens [=Christensen] Røholen [=Rødholen] and Gunild Aslaksdtr [=Aslaksdatter]'s child Hans

His first marriage was to Johanne Olsdatter on 9 October 1835. See https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061019020114, left-hand side, entry 20. Johanne Olsdatter died 16 September 1839 (see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/view/267/pg00000002363244).

For the marriage of Hans Andersen's parents, see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061019010371, right-hand side, second entry for August 18. It is from Trøgstad clerical district and reads, in translation: August 18 [1803] [married] Anders Christens [=Christensen] Røholen [=Rødholen] and Gunild Aslaksdtr Skratelrud [=Skratalrud; this farm is right next to Rødholen].

For the baptismal record for Gunild Aslaksdatter, see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20061019010071, left-hand side, eighth entry from top (the second dito under Dom 15). This is from Trøgstad clerical district and reads, in translation: 15th Sunday of Trinity [in 1772, this is 27 September], [baptised] Aslagt [=Aslak] Brynilsen Schratelrud [=Skratalrud]'s child with name Gunild.

In 1801 census, we have Aslak Brynilsen with his wife Berte Aslaksdatter and four of their children at Skratelrud (see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01058200001847). But Gunild is not among them; instead, she is working as a servant for bachelor Anders Christensen (age 41, and thus born about 1760) at Karlsrud farm #3 [=Rødholen] - see https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/rural-residence/bf01058200001796, entries 18 and 19. In other words, she had already been in Anders's household for at least two years before marrying him.

So, to summarize what I have so far:

Grandparents on father's side: Anders Christensen (born ca. 1760), farmer at Rødholen in Trøgstad, on 18 August 1803 married Gunild Aslaksdatter, who had been born 1772 (baptised 27 September) at the neighboring farm of Skratalrud to Aslak Brynilsen and his wife Berte Aslaksdatter. Their son Hans Andersen was born at Rødholen in 1805 (baptised 23 May).

Grandparents on mother's side: Christen Iversen was born 1772 (baptised 29 March) at Langenes in Eidsberg to Iver Hansen and Mari Iversdatter. He first married Rangnild Olsdatter and moved with her (between 1801 and 1807) to Olberg in Askim. After Rangnild's death in 1811 he married, on 16 March 1812, Marthe Andersdatter, who had been born 1792 (baptised 16 December) at Onstad in Askim to Anders Olsen and Mari Jensdatter. Christen and Marthe's daughter Ragnhild Christensdatter was born 29 January 1818. Christen Iversen died at Olberg 19 July 1842.

Parents: Hans Andersen was born at Rødholen in Trøgstad in 1805 (baptised 23 May) to Anders Christensen and Gunild Aslaksdatter. On 9 October 1835 he married Johanne Olsdatter, who died 16 September 1839. Hans then on 16 November 1841 married Ragnhild Christensdatter, who had been born at Olberg in Askim on 29 January 1818 to Christen Iversen and Marthe Andersdatter. Hans and Ragnhild had four children at Rødholen: twins Maren and Johanne, born 4 July 1842 (Johanne died 29 May 1843), son Johan, born 7 July 1844, and daughter Anne, born 25 March 1850. In 1855, Hans, Ragnhild, and their three surviving children moved to Sivesin in Vestre Toten. Hans died here 5 February 1858. At some time before 1865 Ragnhild remarried to Ole Syversen and moved with daughters Maren and Anne to Maurud on Helgøya; it is unclear what happened to Johan. On 26 April 1869 Ragnhild with daughters Maren and Anne and their stepfather Ole left Helgøya and went via Oslo to Chicago.

Oh my gosh!  I’m absolutely astounded by all the information I’ve received. Thanks so much to all of you❤️  I’m forever grateful  for all the information and links you have shared with me. It’s almost like another world has opened up that I never knew existed.  Words cannot express how thankful I am to you all for reaching out to me.

Our family lore was always that Anne Hansdatter came to America by herself in 1869. Now I learn that her stepfather, mother, and sister came with her!. Now I need to find out how she ended up in Minnesota and what happened to her mother and her sister.

What a a wonderful story this is - so much gratitude to all of you for sharing this family history with me. I never could have found this information on my own.

Many, many thanks❤️

I've tried to see when Ole and Ranghild died, but have not been able to find more than that they are in Census 1880 as Ragnhil and Ole Maurud (Sacred Heart, MN).

From Nes Bydebok Bind 2 Del 1, Øvre Maurud pg 285 we see that only Maren and Anne is mentioned, not Johan.

From Nes Bydebok Bind 2 Del 1 Røråasen pg 660 661 we see parents of Ole.
