Finding my Great Grandfather's Norwegian Name

Recommended Posts

Greetings all,

This is my first post.  I am searching for information on my great grandfather who immigrated from Norway and lived in the State of Iowa, USA most of his life.  He married a fellow Norwegian (Sarah) who's family was also from Haugesund and they had 12 children.  I am having trouble finding any history on him prior to immigrating and the following is what I know:

His name once in the United States was Alexander or Aleak or Alek Lee.  I was told he changed his last name because it was difficult to pronounce.

-He was born in Haugesund, Rogaland, Norway on 29 Sep 1850 (obituary)

-He came to America on 11 July 1869 (obituary)

-I was told he was a fisherman before coming to America and that he disliked the cold/frozen hands of fishing

-He stopped in Cedar Rapids, IA once he got to America and lived in Chicago for 2 years before relocating back to southwestern Iowa.(obituary)

I have no information on his family from Norway or where he came to shore in America.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Darin Lee

The birth records in Haugesund before oct 1850 is not available, but in the confirmation records 1865 there may be something to find: 29 Sep 1850 there was a boy born, named Hendrik Vilhelm, son of Erik Christensen and Elen Salomonsdtr. Has he changed his name completely?

Looks to me like an impressive research. However I couldn`find any "tracks" from his emigration records. Anyway when Henrik Wilhelm doesn`t appear in the norwegian 1875 and later censuses it looks most likely he is your great-grandfather.

His last norwegian records, I came across, was his sailor records which tell us Henrik Vilhelm left (deserted) his ship in London UK 10.th January 1872.

I wonder where the last name Lee comes from...!

So do I, Grethe,  This is  just an preliminary assumption;  According to Gard og Folk  Skåre Vol 2 page  900-901 the family lived under a cottars place named  _ Leite_ under bruk 6 Sørhaug.

However in his seamen records ( September 1869) he appear by his Sørhaug name.

Wow.  You guys are great.

I do have many of his records once in the US but i don't have anything prior to that.  I'm unsure if he also changed his first name as well but was hoping he didn't for my research sake.   The last name "Lee" reportedly was adopted by him from a farm that he worked at temporarily once getting to the US.

There was a family bible at one point but it was lost unfortunately.  No documentation provides his mother or father's name from Norway.  Those spaces were always left blank.  I'm going to have to use Google translate on some of this but I truly appreciate all the help from you all.

According to the OBIT he arrived in America on July 11th 1869, stopping at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, before moving to Chicago same year (1869). Stayed there for 2 years before moving to Adamas County. Do you have any records confirming the arrival date? Is he found in 1870 Census?

If the candidate Henrik Wilhelm Eriksen Sørhaug is the "your" Aleak (Alexander), he cannot have entered USA in 1869 and stayed there as he was at sea in the same period - see:

Henrik Wilhelm Eriksen Sørhaug deserted ship 10th January 1872, hence the information from OBIT regarding Aleak's arrival and movement in the states does not support this is the same person. However, how accurate is the information in the OBIT? It is very specific about dates, could they originate from Naturalization papers? Have you found his petition or declaration?

Correct.  I have found one document stating he was naturalized and another saying he was not. I have found his birthdate to be consistent in many documents.  I have not found any immigration papers as of yet.  Thanks,

Do you have a link to the document stating he was naturalized?

I see from census 1900 it states he's not naturalized, however 1910 census states he was and the same for 1920 census where it also states he was naturalized 1880.

In all of the census' mentioned it states immigration year 1870.

Thanks Egil,

I too have only found the census information you noted not any naturalization documents. I wasn’t sure if 1870 was a rounding up year or an actual year.

If your great grandfather was born in Haugesund, perhaps he would have emigrated from Stavanger....? Unfortunately the original emigration records or protocols for Stavanger 1867-1928 were lost in a fire.

However, some of the lost material is replaced by transcriptions that were sent in to Statistics Norway. These transcriptions are basis for the

searchable emigration records for Stavanger 1903-1928 on the Digital Archives:

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/search/sources?s=stavanger&from=1903&to=1928&format=all&archive_key=&sc[]=em

On the old Digital Archives there also was a reconstructed searchable database for emigrants leaving Stavanger 1825-1970. However, this database was far from complete, and it has not be transferred to the present Digital Archives.

The 1870 Census was conducted under the authority of the Census Act of 1850. A new law, approved on May 6, 1870, called for two procedural changes: The marshals were to submit the returns from the population questionnaire to the Census Office by September 10, 1870; all other questionnaires were due by October 1, 1870. Additionally, penalties for refusing to reply to enumerator inquiries were expanded to cover all questions asked on all questionnaires.

The only document which state his exact birth date is his death certificate (have you found other documents?). On the certificate his birth date could have been calculated from his age or vice versa.
