I was trying to look at the 1865 census, but since I can't read Norwegian, obviously I struggled.  Is there anyone who can do research on my family if I provided names, dates, Parish and other info I have?

Takk!

Mark

Thank You!

Johannes (John) Simonson

BIRTH 14 FEB 1868 • Ensby, Oyer Parish, Norway

DEATH 18 JAN 1916 • Columbus, Burke County, North Dakota

He is my great-grandfather, married to:

Eline (Eleanora) Berntsdatter

BIRTH 01 AUG 1871 • Lillehammer, Oppland, Norway

DEATH 16 JUL 1948 • Columbus, North Dakota

I have John Simonson’s parents as:

Simen Olsen

BIRTH Ensby, Oyer Parish, Norway

DEATH Unknown

And Simen married to either a Karen Pedersdr or a Karen Tostesdatter

I was hoping that the census would give me more clues but am struggling to decipher them.

I can't thank all of you enough!  Amazing!  and of course, it always opens more questions!!

So what kind of a place did they live where my grandfather Simen was a servant and Karen is listed as a milkmaid.   Where would find stories of the place and time?

I am assuming that the son takes the father's first name and adds "son" hence this is where Simonson came from, and hence the line that leads to me.  Is that correct?

Is there any trace of Simen Olsen's parents?

What do you mean by sponsors, as in "Sponsors: Even Li, Knud Li, ....? Klokkerstuen, Sigrid Øvremoen, Sigrid Skjönsberg."

I am blessed to have all your help!

Mark

Likely him arriving in Canada. Record from Ancestry.com.  I see that you have a Family Tree on Ancestry.com so you should be able to access the original manifest.

I thought ‘godparents’ / vitnesses to the baptism were called sponsors..

Yes that is true but not so much in America, where we usually use godparents or witnesses.

Simen Olsen at Li was born about 1837. I have found two candidates in the confirmation lists in 1852. - no. 9 and 16.

Nr. 9 is not the Simen at Li farm. Nr. 9 is living at home with his parents in 1865:

I think this is the Simen Olsen (with parents Ole and Dorthe) born in Ringsaker (no. 16 in the confirmation list)  in Öyer in 1875:

Thank you again.  I believe grandfather came over first with perhaps the older kids (boys) and then grandmother came later with the little ones... still nailing down the details of that.

But it is so wonderful to get info about the "srvant and the mildmaid"

Just like names that end with son or sen mean that name is derived from the father, ie Ole is the fathers first name and the son is Olesen or Oleson or Olson etc. The names of the girls end with datter or dotter ie the daughter of the father. Ole is the father and the his girl children take the name Olsdatter etc.

According to the 1865 Census for Bernt Syversen he was born about 1840 and married to Martha Larsdatter. This is likely the marriage of the couple  May of 1860.

See the original record at number 6.

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070603630456

You can also find the record in the Ancestry.com site but it is a little tricky because of the way they close to spell Oppland.

The most likely baptism record for Bernt Syversen born about 1840 is this one.

It gets little tricky to push back further but the marriage record forSyvert  Svendsen in 1830 gives him the farm name Onsum. There is a record for the baptism of a Siver in 1807 with father Svend and the farm named Onsum.

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/255/pd00000001322037

Siver Svendsen

in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927

Name:Siver Svendsen

Gender:Male

Birth Date:14 apr 1807

Baptism Date:19 apr 1807

Baptism Place:Faaberg ,Opland,Norway

Father:Svend Onsum

FHL Film Number:125456

Original record is in the middle column at Dom Jubilate, which is 19 April in 1807.

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070603620586

Maybe the marriage of Svend Onsum. His full name is Svend Christiansen Onsum.

Wow...especially to Anton and Anne-Lise.  You have given so much of your time, so much information and I cannot thank you enough.  I have quite a bit of info already of the Simonsons after they settled in America, but all this gives the information I was missing to connect things back to Norway, plus all the historical links about life in those times.  You've given me a lot of reading and work to do, plus I want to embed all the links you provided to the appropriate family member on my Ancestry site so the information can carry forward to other people.

In the seventies I traveled to Norway, thinking naively I would see my grandfather's home, and traveled to Lillehammer, not realizing there were two cities of that name (different spellings) and I went to the wrong one.  But of course I wasn't armed with all the information I've gathered over the years.  Perhaps one day I can return, and touch the land my ancestors once touched.

My deepest thanks, and I've bookmarked this forum in case I stumble across more mysteries (as I'm sure I will since unraveling history is like doors opening to doors opening to doors...)
