Need help understanding two probate cards for the estate of Hellek Ingebretsen Tveiten in Rollag parish in Buskerud.  He died in 1745.  It appears the first index card is dated 1 July 1745 but there is another date added which appears to be 10.10.1745- not sure why and what is the significance of the entry above the dates?  Then there is a second probate card dated 1752 but for his widow Ragnhild Knutsdatter- (but she didn't die until 1764 according to Rollag Bygdebok).  Did Ragnhild and the children share in the first estate and then did Ragnhild give much of her share to the children in 1752 12 years before her death??  Appreciate any help in interpreting what this means.

Excerpt from Rollag Bygdebok p. 119

Hellek Ingebretsson døydde alt i 1745. Ragnhild Knutsdotters bu kom brutto opp i 247 rel.  Av dette var 1 hud 7-1/9 skinn in Tveiten verd 189 rdl.  Nettoverdet var 233 rdl.

Without looking up the protocol:  There were probably two meetings, 1 July and 10 Oct.

Above the dates: "S.[side] 70b", Page 70b (of the protocol)

Yes, Ragnhild apparently divided her estate between the children in 1752. There was probably a condition for the one that got the real estate, to take care of her in her age.

A question back, about terminology: in all dictionaries I have access to (Webster, Oxford English, ...) "probate" is associated with a will  (Oxford: "The official proving of a will;"- since probate originally means proving/trying). In a Norwegian "skifte", there is usually not a will.

The first "skifte", 1745:

There were two meetings, one to open and get an overview; the second to divide the inheritance.

The second, 1752:

Thanks Ivar.

Regarding probate- the only reason I used the term is digitalarkivet search engine calls those index cards "probate index cards".

I'm not a lawyer but probate is a process for settling the estate- especially if someone has a lot of property.  Some states have laws that allow smaller estates to be settled without going to probate- even if you don't have a will.  Also if you have your assets set up properly with beneficiaries designated and trusts established on property you can avoid your family from having to go thru probate.
