Trying to learn about Finnish ancestors in Hedmark, Norway

Recommended Posts

Carla J Tweeton

My DNA shows 2% Finland.  I'm sure  my family in Varmland , SW most likely goes back to Finland.

I'd like an opinion on what I found of my late husband's family:

His gt. grandfather   John Steffensen Brandvold 1856-1928

son of Steffen Johansen  1836-1907

son of Johan Olsen askhaug 'purkainen' Frysøberget 1796-1860

son of Ole Stephensen askhoug purkainen karlstorpet 1757

My husband died in 2002 before DNA testing.

Wondering if the 'purkainen' would mean a family carried this name from Finland ?

John Steffensen and parents came from the Hedmark , Grue church area in Norway.

Thank you,

Carla Tweeton

There were lots of people of Finnish descent living in Grue at the time, see the map here: https://hammarbacken.eu/Stefan%20Helsing/skogsfinska%20sl%c3%a4ktnamn%20i%20skandinavien.pdf

so it seems likely there was a Finnish connection based on the name Purkainen. Purkainin is one of the Finnish names in the article.

The name may have been written Purken, as the article points to a Nils Purken  who took communion in 1701 in Hof, Norway.

It could also be written as Purkan, as described in Vinger Bygdebok where a Henrik Henriksen Purkan was involved in a border dispute in 1766. https://www.nb.no/items/51042438c804c833d164dfcd9176440e?page=425&searchText=%22Purkainen%22

I noticed that Ole Stephensen Askhoug Purkainen from 1757 might be a sibling of Anne Steffensdatter Purkainen married to Lars Andersen Multiainen Karlstorpet i Grue mentioned here: https://forum.arkivverket.no/topic/174662-lars-andersen-multiainen/

Here's the family according to Geni https://www.geni.com/people/Steffen-Purkainen/6000000012663996649
but all information need checking

There's a group called Forest Finn DNA where one Purkainen has taken a DNA test, but there is no current information tying him directly to Finland. Of course, this being male DNA there are lots of possible errors stemming from the fact that biological father and father in the church records isn't always one and the same.

This link seems to be about the same family http://www.disnorge.no/slektsforum/viewtopic.php?t=143266&sid=90e8ce415d8800dcead06c7a59920745

Purch also seems to be a spelling. https://www.nb.no/items/a5903d2a870e57016fb9808c45ee3f84?page=221&searchText=%22Purkainen%22

This newspaper tells an old story about how the farmer Heikki Purkainen, at Åserudnæset, who was accused of letting his cattle graze on his neighborg's farm in 1766, settled the dispute after telling said neighbor that he'd seen the Hulder (supernatural being, a sort of fairy, but not the small, cute and winged kind) grazing her cows there and eating it bare. https://www.nb.no/items/832330dbf1e37d04add3425a5394f9fa?page=33&searchText=%22Purkainen%22

Thank you very much for all your effort.  I'll continue to work on it.  I can borrow the Grue bygdebok from our Library .

I think this man must truly be correct with roots in Finland.    I have his birthdate as 24th of Sept., 1848 born at Asnes, hedmark Norway.

He is Gustav Gunneriusen Korsoe, born 24 Sept. 1848 at Asnes ,Grue, Hedmark.  His parents being Gunnerius Olsen Korsmoe and

Kari Johannesdtr. Nauilainen. and a note (Finland 1540 Sata-kunta Finland). The  wife of Gustav is Karen Olsdatter Venberget,

born 26 Jan.1852, to Ole Tostensen  and mother Karen Kristiansen Johnson who later married Steffen Johnson Brandvold.

Don't feel you must answer....I appreciate what  you all   have done.!

The most likely candidate for baptism of Johan Thomasen is this one.

Johan Thomasen

in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927

Name:Johan Thomasen

Gender:Male

Baptism Date:29 mai 1768 (29 May 1768)

Baptism Place:Grue,Hedmark,Norway

Father:Thomes Pedersen

Mother:Kirsti Johansdr

FHL Film Number:124284

Middle of the page in the third column from the left. Farm is Svartberget.

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/kb20070603240344

Looking at the other children from Thomas Pedersen on Ancestry.com it would appear that he was first married to a Berte Olsdatter with whom he had two children and she must have died about 1760 when he married Kirsti Johansdatter.

I did find this Family Tree on Geni.com that seems to cover the same family as above. The tree does go back far enough to show some of the people were born in Finland. It would be nice to us some Bygdebøker to confirm some of the data in the Tree. The Tree has no sources.
