Ragnhild Name --- Other English translations?

In my records I have two sisters who come from Norway together in the mid 1890's Kjerste (Age 28) and Ragnhild (Age 18). My issue is i cannot find Ragnhild on any records nor is she anywhere near her sister after their arrival. I was wondering if Norwegians would change their name to something more common when coming to the US?

Norwegian names such as Gulbrand and Guri could be changed to English equivalent names such as Gilbert and Julie. Anders and Andreas could be Andrew, and Torbjørn, Torgeir and so on, might be Thomas and Synneva could be Susan. I'm not an expert on this matter, but I've seen this in US censuses on for instance Family Search. 

 

As far as I can see from your post, the two sisters came from Finland and arrived together in the US. Do you have a link to the immigration records for the two sisters in question?

In my family, my great aunt  Ragnhild became Ronnie.

I do notice a tendency to keep the first initial the same.

This looks promising. I have some others from the family in this area. i will need to look back and see which side.

 

I will do some more digging on this. The only issue i see is the fathers name is listed as Hans Sveen but her fathers name is Ole Almundsen.

I found the baptism records for Kjersti and Matias in Ancestry.com and the baptism record for Kjersti in the Parish book for Øyer but a quick search did not turn up Ragnhild. Have you found her baptism record?

I have not found Ragnhild's baptism records. I honestly haven't been looking much for records before she emigrated. Since she came here so young i was hoping to get help in finding where she went once she got to the US and if she could have possibly changed her first name to something else.

 

Focusing more on US records and once i found her and where she went then i would work myself back to Norway.

Still would be interesting to find out what happened to Ragnhild Sveen, after she arrived in America, no matter who her parents are. 

 

The marriage record found by Åsbjorg Susort is still of interest since the birth year of Ragna Sveen is listed as 1877 and her Birth Place is Oyer (Øyer) both of which fit well with Ragnhild Christiansdatter from Mortensveen.
