Help finding farm books, hjelp til å finne gårdsbøker

Hello,

 

I have searched the Digital Archive ( i use a VPN since i am from USA).. but have searched as much as I can as i don't speak Norwegian or understand how the farm books work/where to begin. Below is a list of some of the farms i am looking for along with as much info as far as where they are located as i could find.

I pulled these farm names from: Afjørd og Jøssund Gårdshistorie - Bind I 1500-1800

 

I just have no idea where to start, what to search, etc in trying to find these.

 

1. Vassnasset (under the Vicarage?) That part was from google translate (Vassnesset  u. prestegården)

2. Hofsbakken in Lom is where one of my relatives was born.

3. Vasstrand

4. Skjern

5. Mortensveen, Martinsveen, or just Sveen (Oppland county, Øyer parish)

6. Gudbrandsdalen (i think this is a farm name and i believe it should be in Oppland county as well)

 

Any help is appreciated very much.

First no. 6. Gudbrandsdalen is not a farm name, but the name of the largest valley in the south-eastern part of Norway, in Oppland. 

 

You can search for farm names in the 1886 and 1838 farm registres.

Some of the names you will not find here or in bygdebooks, because only farms were listed - not cotter’s places or husmannsplasser.

There is no one answer or easy answer to working with farm names. The names change their spelling through the years making them sometimes difficult to find. Anne-Lise's suggestion to use the Norwegian Census records to find the location of the farms is a good one that I have used many times over the years. I also will use the Advanced Person Search part of Digital Archives. Put part or all of the farm name in the Domicile slot followed by * and search.  English version.

If you have an idea of what parish the farm is in you can look at the parish description from Family Search. Most of the time a list of farm names is included. Here is the page for Lom, Oppland.

Vasneset is farm 68/8 under the Vicarage in Åfjord.

This post from Anne-Lise is a good illustration of the difficulties you will face. Looking at the page on Biri, Oppland in Family Search you see two sections on farm names. The simple one which does not contain a Hofsbakken and a larger more difficult one to read that does contain a Hoffsbakken.

Skjern is an odd one and you may not have the spelling that is used in the Norwegian records. Since you seem to be most interested in Oppland parishes, I put in Skjer* in the Domicile slot for Oppland Select All, (that is all parishes) and found Skjerven, which maybe the place you are looking for. 

 

Family Search for Vardal does not have a Skjerven but does have a Skjervum vestre. Maybe that is the same maybe not, you have to be flexible with the farm names. The more work you do with them the better you will become at guessing the right spelling.

The farm numbering changed in 1886 to ‘gårds- og bruksnummer’. Previously ( in 1838) the farms had ‘matrikkelnummer + løpenummer’ that you can see mentioned in the 1886-registre.

 

Mortensveen 76/1 (or 2, 3, 4) was earlier 144/ 224 (and letters a, b, c etc.) (Gammelt=old)

Thank you all for the quick replies and taking the time to link resources and teach me. I cannot express how amazing this forum is and how i would be close to nowhere without your help.

 

I have started to bookmark the links you all replied to for this topic (and others). Reading through them this evening and weekend and hopefully can get a better handle on locating farms / their spelling / and how to do some more generic searches.
