I notice that everyone seems to be posting in Norwegian here, however I'm going to try this anyhow.  I just found out that my great grandfather (Bernhard Jensen - later known as Bernhard Johnson) had a child, out of wedlock, in Lier, Norway before he immigrated to the US (Alpena/Spruce - Michigan).  This child was Jenny Marie Bernhardsdatter (born 10 Feb 1888).  There were some posts back on this site in 2006 from a Målfrid Larsen, who was looking for relatives of Jenny Marie.  I don't see Malfrid listed anymore (she was a guest on the site).  Anyhow, thought I would post this out there and see if anyone responds.

 

I also would love to get more information about this side of my family.  Bernhard Jensen, born 15 Nov 1864 in Lier, Norway.  Immigrated to the US in March, 1888 along with Anne Andersdatter, born 25 Aug 1859 (who was listed as Anne Anderson on the marriage certificate to Bernhard Johnson married on 24 Apr 1889 in Alpena, Michigan).

I should have added that the birth mother of Jenny Marie was Karoline Bergithe Kristoffersdatter.

Tove - thank you for the information.  On the 1900 census, any idea who Jenny Marie is living with at that time.  She is just 2 years old then and I know her birth mother was Karoline Bergithe Kristoffersdatter.  I notice that is states "Forsørges af Fattigvæsenet"  after her name and I did a google translation and they came up with "supported by the poor".  Does this mean Jenny Marie was living in some type of orphanage or fostered by people?

Thanks Allan!  And that post you reposted from 2006 is what a Norwegian friend provided me which led me to this site.  So I signed up.   I know lots of my Norwegian relatives (and have visited them and keep in regular touch with them) on my paternal grandmother's side, however I don't have much information on my paternal grandfather's side.  My grandfather was born here in Michigan so I know most information from then to the present, however I'm trying to go back to my great grandfather/great grandmother - Bernhard and Anne and find out more.  This led to finding out yesterday about Jenny Marie.  So hopefully other relatives of her will see this and respond.  I appreciate your help!!

I cannot quite see that Jenny Marie Larsen in Strømsø (Drammen) could the same person as Jenny Marie Bernhardsdatter/Bernhardsen - even if the year of birth is the same.

Here is the sister of Bernhard: Hanna (Hana) Jensdatter

Jens Nilsen and Anne (Marie) Helgesdatter were not married yet at the time she was born. Jens Nilsen was a widower.

His first wife's name was Birthe Gulbrandsdatter. They were married in Lier 2nd March 1819. Children: Sille, Nils, Peder, Gunild Kirstine.

And the brother: Jens Jensen. According to the church records Jens Nilsen and Anne Marie Helgesdatter were married the same day he was baptised 5th April 1854. Jens was about 30 years older than his wife.

Tove - when I look at the marriage records for Jens Nilsen and Anne Marie Helgesdatter it says married 1854 - 04-05, however when I look at the actual record in the 1st column the date looks to be Jan 30, 1854.  I'm not sure if I'm just reading this all wrong or what (since I'm having a hard time translating the actual titles of each column in the church book).  Do you happen to know?  And I really appreciate all the help you have given me on this.  I'm finally getting a chance to look at all these records.  Had a very busy week at work so had to wait until the weekend 🙂
