Bakke, Ulvhild (Reierson) 1825 - 1905

Elkader Argus, Wed., 8 Nov. 1905.

Died, at her home in Wagner township, Friday, Nov. 3, Mrs. Ulvhild Reierson Bakke, at the age of 80 years. In the death of Mrs. Bakke one more of our old pioneers has gone to join the silent majority, after a long and useful life spent in hard labor and the task of earning her daily bread and raising and bringing up a family.

She was born in Numedal, Norway, the 13th of July, 1825, and was married in the old country, Dec. 26th, 1850, to Mr. Reier T. Bakke, who died about ten years ago. Quite awhile before his death they had made their home with their son, Torkel T. Bakke, to whom they had sold their farm. He gave them a good and comfortable home and cared for them to the best of his ability. After Mr. Bakke's death his wife continued to live with her son at the old home.

In 1862, Mr. and Mrs. Bakke left their native home and came to Clayton county which has been their home ever since. Seven children were born to them, five of whom are living, two boys and three girls, all of whom are married and have homes of their own. She had the satisfaction of seeing all her children self supporting and making their own way through this world.

Seven or eight months ago she fell and broke her leg, and this accident coming on in her old age made her helpless and unable to care for herself, but she was well taken care of until death came to her as a relief from her sufferings.

On Monday afternoon, Nov. the 6th, she was laid at rest in the Norway cemetery beside her husband. She is at rest from her troubles, her life work done. Rev. Arveson preached the funeral sermon.
