Who were Johannes Olsen's parents?

I live in Australia and unable to access the Norway Archives, so I am hoping someone could spare some time to help with a dead end I have in my research of my family. I would like to identify the parents of the following person born in the Ogna area of Rogaland around 1758 and died 13 February 1803. He has several farm names including:

Johannes Olsen Kvalbein

Johannes Olsen Boxdal

Johannes Olsen Bogsdalen

Johannes Bøgsdahlen

This is Johannes in the 1801 census with his wife Martha Olsdatter Bogsdalen and their son, John Johannesen Fuglestad, aged 4, who is my 2nd great-grandfather…..

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/pf01058350002066

Johannes and Marthe/ Marta/ Marit were married on 28 Nov 1784 in Ogna.

This is his entry (Bogsdalen 12) on page 112 of "Gards og ættesoga: For Ogna" (Vol 3)

https://www.nb.no/items/9f3df5c0d3cee86a23f30408ef31446c?page=115

This is a record for his death:

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/pg00000001197142

My apologies for not posting this in Norweigan.

Thank you very much for any help you can give me.

Med vennlig hilsen 🙂

Ian Perry

I the "Gards og ættesoga" Marit is the daughter of Ola Nilsson and Elen Omundsdotter.

Some of the children:

Asser, 1754 - Ole Boxdals barn

Rogaland fylke, Eigersund, Ogna i Eigersund, Ministerialbok nr. A 2 (1720-1757), Kronologisk liste 1754
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/8756/145

Marit's elder brother, Asser Olsen was married to the widow Guri Isaksdatter. Here they are in the 1801 census:  https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01058350001753.

Here is Asser's second marriage in 1803 to the widow Ingeborg Rasmusdatter:

Marta, 1757

https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/8756/163

Magdalene, 1752 - Ole Nielsen Boxdal

Rogaland county, Eigersund, Ogna in Eigersund, Parish register (official) no. A 2 (1720-1757), Chronological list 1752
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8756/134

Malene, who died in 1757 - age 5:

Rogaland county, Eigersund, Ogna in Eigersund, Parish register (official) no. A 2 (1720-1757), Chronological list 1757
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8756/163

Malene, 1759

Rogaland fylke, Eigersund, Ogna i Eigersund, Ministerialbok nr. A 3 (1758-1775), Kronologisk liste 1759, Side 13
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/8757/14

According to the "Gards og ættesoga" her parents are not seen in baptisms, marriages or deaths in Ogna, so one does not know where their come from. Still it says that Ole Nilsen was born about 1725 and Elen was born about 1728. But here I guess I have found their marriage record in Egersund parish. The bride's name is written Helene Aamundsdatter:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NW66-19S

Rogaland county, Eigersund, Ogna in Eigersund, Parish register (official) no. A 2 (1720-1757), Chronological list 1751
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8756/121

But there is no farm or place names mentioned in the marriage record.

Following the info given by Grethe. Ancestry.com has transcribed some records from Ogna, Rogaland around the time frame of interest. I do find the transcribed record for Marit born in 1757. Father is listed as Ole Boxdal.

However I do not find any Joannes born about 1758 in either Ogan or Eigersund in the Ancestry.com records. Searching just Rogaland gives six candidates from other parishes in Rogaland. Not really any way to pick among the candidates without having a farm name to use. If you want me to try and follow up on any of the candidates listed below let me know.

Thank you Grethe, that is very kind of you to help me with that information. I have just woken up here so will start looking at what you have posted and come back with any questions.

Did Marit's husband Johannes Olsen Kvalbein appear in any records apart from in the links I found originally?

Anton, thank you for looking for Johannes for me. If he is not from the Ogna area there maybe no way of finding him then?

Someone has suggested to me that he may have come from another district and worked at Kvalbein and soon after that he married. When he arrived the pastor has subsequently written that name in the church record. Apparently there are some church records which list people moving in/out of the parish but most churches did not make such lists. It was also suggested that another source would be "travel passes". If someone moved from one district to another they had to present these travel passes or passports to the pastor that they had a legitimate reason for travelling e.g., work or family. Unfortunately most of those documents have been lost.

I don't have access to those Ancestry records, but if you could have a quick look to see if they have any connection to the Ogna area or Kvalbein in particular that would be appreciated.

mvh Ian

The two from Lund seem to be far more likely candidates than the remaining ones, as these are all from the far northern part of Rogaland (Karmøy or Haugalandet), whereas Lund is the same region as Ogna.

One is still in Lund in 1801 https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01058348001604

The other one apparently moved out of the parish, or he died before the 1801 census

Thanks Matthias. Yes, I agree with you about the Lund candidates. That Johannes in the link was married to a Guri Haavorsdatter though.

Are the baptism records for both the Johannes Olsens in Lund (26 Nov 1758 and 7 Jan 1759) here (both on same page?). I can't read it - just guessing ...

Yes, the first is called Ole Johannes, son of Ole Ansteensen from Sunde

Sunde is a part of Flekkefjord, and includes Drangeid where one Johannes Olsen was living in 1801

Stenberg is inland in Lund (and closer to Ogna)

The family is mentioned in the local history book from

There should be probates after the parents dated 27 May 1779 (Ingrid Salvesdatter) and 10 July 1794 (Ole Tronsen)

I found a transcript (index card) of the first, where Johannes is mentioned

Awesome! This is looking promising. Thanks, Mathias. The dates work and the names also.

Johannes Olsen Stenberg’s older brother, Tron Olsen, was confirmed in Lund on St. Michael’s Day 1776, however, I cannot find Johannes’ confirmation in Lund in the following years.

Tron, last entry on the right page:

Johannes Olsen Qvalbej (Kvalbein) on the other hand, was confirmed in Ogna in 1779 on Dominica exaudi (May 16).

Lower end of the first column, right page here:

SAST, Egersund sokneprestkontor, SAST/A-101807/S08/L0004Ministerialbok nr. A 4 /1, 1776-1789

It is imaginable that Johannes was sent away from Stenberg to Kvalbein after his mother’s death in October 1778

Thank you Matthias for continuing his search for me. I appreciate it very much. I will be continuing to look at what you have found over the next few days. Just yesterday I found profiles for this Lund family in both Family Search and My Heritage ...

@Matthias Kolberg@Anton Hagelee

Matthias and Anton:

Thank you both for all your help last weekend. I'm happy to tell you that you solved my problem and I've been able to map my family several generations back from my 3rd great grandfather Johannes. I have been able to find 2 DNA matches so far that connect back to him and even a couple of generations before him.

It appears, as you suggested, that young Joannes has for some reason left his birth farm (Steinberg farm in Lund) after his mother's death in 1788, and had his confirmation in the following year 1779 when he was 20 years old in Ogna. It must have been a compelling reason for him to leave as I've been told that movement between areas was not so easy in those days. I noticed that just above him in the record was another guy called Mathis Mathison Vatnemo. I believe he was likely the father of Mathias Mathiason who later married one of Johannes' daughters.

Anyway, I wouldn't have been able to achieve this great result without your help, and I appreciate you taking the time to assist me.

Best regards, Ian

Ian, a late addition,  but perhaps some information that may be of help going forward. :

I have the same People as the Overland tree in the My Heritage link that you show above,  but only one pair are direct ancestors.   I used Mehus's Bygdebok  to check that portion of the tree, but only my direct line.

I  have  dna matches  in Norway  with two people with the last name Perry that  are from close to  Steinberg/Steenberg  area in Lund whom i share some ancestors with.   You may be able to access their trees on my heritage.      I do not show you under My Heritage dna.

A good reference for the area is   https://eivinds.net/6-steinberg/       which covers the Lund area  in the 15-1600's,  and has been the most accurate one for the area i have found   (but has disagreed with other earlier published trees)
