Finding information on Norwegian ancestors

Recommended Posts

I am a Canadian coming to Norway in spring of 2025. I am interested in finding documents regarding my grandfather who emigrated to USA then eventually Canada. I also want to explore the family name further back in Norway. Is there only a digital option or can a book a time at the national archives to search further?

You may visit one of our reading rooms: https://www.arkivverket.no/en/about-us/visit

The opening hours of the reading room in Oslo is 9 am - 3 pm Monday - Thursday, except for summer, Christmas and Easter.  It is not necessary to book a time. However, most basic archive documents for exploring family history are digitally available in The Digital Archives (https://www.digitalarkivet.no/), so visiting the reading room is only necessary in order to read documents that are not digitally available. If you are going to visit the reading room, it is valuable if you have found out in advance which (or what kind of) documents you want to see.
