When using the 1801 Census, and not being able to find a person, the question arises as to whether the person was 1) in the military, 2) in a prison, or 3) confined to a mental or medical facility. Were these persons included in the 1801 Census, and if so, how and where?

When you do not find a person, the reason is probably not those listed by you. The people in such institutions are listed in the town they are situated. (Not where the person lived before going into the military etc.)

A general piece of advice is always to try all kind of spellings of a name. In 1801 Norwegian names were often twisted into some Danish or even German look-alike. This is hard for all of us - and I should think even harder if you do not have some experience in such "de-coding" and do not speak Norwegian. Try with just some of the letters in the name. Or send a mail with your version of the name you look for to me. I'll try to help you in the right direction, but am no expert!Good luck from Agnete S: agnetesc@online.no
