My great-great-grandfather, Hans Holmbo, is shown in the 1865 Census in Beitstaden. He is shown as being born in 1804 in Nordmore. Where is Nordmore? Where would I look in the 1801 Census for this family? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I understand that Holmbo is a priest line but do not understand what that means.

Nordmøre is north-eastern part of Møre og Romsdal county. Kristiansund is the main town.A "priest line" must be a translation of Norwegian "preste-linje". Norwegians were Lutherans, so i think "clergyman line" is a better translation. It think it means a family with many pastors and a family surname. Common Norwegian before 1850 did not use family surnames. Families with a family surname had a foreign origin, or they were pastors, military men or other upper class people.There is information of the Holmboe familly in the encyclopedia "Store Norske Leksikon": 1. Jens Olssøn (ca 1600-1700) from Hirtsholmene near Fredrikshavn, Denmark 2. Ole Jenssøn Holmboe, (1637-1715), pastor (vicar), Tyrvild, Jutland, Denmark 3. Hans Holmboe, (1684-1762), colonel 4. Hans Fredrik Holmboe (1729-1784), merchant, Christiania (Oslo) 5. Hans Holmboe (1769-1821), pastor, Beitstaden 6. decendants in Trøndelag area, - among them Arnold Holmboe (1873-1947), secretary of State.Your Hans Holmbo, born 1805 (= 61 years in 1865 census), must be a son of pastor Hans Holmboe (1769). In the 1801 census the pastor is still unmarried. He is a curate in Skedsmo (Skytsmoe), Akershus county.Lenke
