I have been told that my g-grandfather Alfred Magnuson was from Hammerfest and that his parents were Carl Magnuson and Maria (Tiberg) and that Carl's parents were Olouse and Catherine Olson from Trondheim. Alfred was born Nov. 1, 1871 in Hammerfest. He had brothers named Peter and Anton. Carl was a sailor and Alfred was a fisherman. This is all I know. I do not know any farm names which makes it almost impossible to search(At least I don't think Olson and Magnuson are farm names). Alfred immigrated in 1891 I believe to Quebec and from there to Winnipeg and then to Gary, Minnesota to stay with relatives. I don't know who these relatives were either. Can anyone please help me. Thank you in advance.

An additional comment:Olson/Olsen and Magnusson/Magnussen are definetely not farm names. They are patromyms, "surnames" derived from the first name of a person's father. Seen from Scandinavia, the "-son"-form (Olson/Magnusson) are usually swedish or americanized norwegian (or danish) patronyms. In Norway and Denmark, the patronyms would have a "-sen"-ending (Olsen/Magnussen).Thus,your Alfred's name in 1875 should formally have been Alfred Carlssen (since his father's first name was Carl). However, in the cities, patronyms tend to transform into surnames, but it was only until 1924 a law was passed ruling that all norwegians must have an distinct family name.Mvh Kjell H

I cannot help you in finding your gg-parents, but I have made some searches to try to verify your information. According to the church records of Hammerfest ( [url="http://www.rhd.uit.no/rhdbin/kb_sok.asp?fornavn=&etternavn=tiberg&bosted=&fraar=&tilaar=&kbok=Daap>Lenke) Alfred Marenius was born Nov 1 1871 in Hammerfest, father Carl Magnus Olaussen (sailor, born 1848) and mother Marie Fredrikke Tiberg (maid, born 1846). By his brother Peder Olaf’s christening (in Hammerfest 27.10.1878) the parents are said to be born 1850 and 1849, and by his brother Anton Eliser’s christening, Apr 6th 1885, they are said to be born 1847 and 1846. By search in the cencus of 1875 I find Karl Magnus Olausen born 1849 in Brønø (now written Brønnøy), a sailor living in Hammerfest with his wife Marie Fredrikke, born 1845 in Karungi (Karunki) in Russian Finland, together with their son Alfred. (Lenke). According to the cencus of 1900, Carl Magnus Olausen and Marie Fredrikke are still living in Hammerfest, together with their son Anton. Carl Magnus is said to be born 1845 in Brønnø, Helgeland, and Marie is said to be born 1845 in Sweden. At this time there is another fischerman, Anthon Kristian Lyder Olsen, living with this family. He is also born in Brønnø and is probably a relative of Carl Magnus. (Please note the the different writing of the names) I also find that Alfred M Olaussen emigrated from Trondheim to Gary Minn. Aug 24th 1892 by the ship Rollo. His ticket was prepaid from the States (http://digitalarkivet.uib.no). In the period 1871 to 1885 17 persons with the familyname Tiberg emigrated from Trondheim, maily to Hancock, Mich. Carl Magnus Olaussen comes from Brønnøy, Nordland. I recommend you to put your query on one of these websites: http://www.troms-slekt.com/, http://www.finnmark-slekt.com/,
