Berit Knudsen gave me some help recently with tracing my ancestor, Tosten Gulbrandsen baptised 28th January 1748 in Nordrerhov.I would like to confirm one point with him if he can reply.He provided this information:'A lot of people from Norderhoug and Sigdal moved to Bragernes and Lier. When you look at the names of the children you will see they used the names of the grandparents, and started with his family so my guess is: since it is only one girl and I belive it is after the mother of Tosten. But of course it could also be after their own mother.Tosten bapt. 28/1 1748 Norderhaug father Gulbrand Weme and mother Elie Olsdtr. Ellen is very often mixed with Elie.Maybe it is possible for someone to take a look in the book 'Ringerikske slekter' under Weme. ' My question relates to the fact that Ellen Tostensen appears as a son not a daughter in both the 1801 and 1815 census for Lier.I would assume then that he wasn't named after his mother/grandmother or were sons occaisionally given names like their grandmothers?Any help in these matters would be good.I want to make sure I have he correct ancestor.Thanking you.Chris Nilsen.

Hi Criss.while you're waiting for an answere:Sons were not named after their mothers / grandmothers without the name being 'bent' - i. e. another very simular name was used.But I took a look at the base here 'døpte i Lier 1794-' and there are a lot of Elen/Ellen children of both sexes. It seems like this name was both a boys and a girls name in the district. Or probably more correct one name for boys and one name for girls pronounced so simular that the danish educated reverend couldn't tell the difference and wrote both the same way.If Berit Knudsen has help you - it's allmost certain you've got the right answere. She's a very good helper...
