I have been given information that the Hedrum Bygdebok shows Arne was aged 60 in 1701 on page 140. The internet search of the 1701 census shows him to be 63 in 1701. Can it be established which one is correct? LenkeWhat is an Oppsidre?

Thank you Kristian What is the difference between an 'oppsidder', a 'bruker' and a 'dreng'?

Hello Jeff... I would siad that a 'oppsidder' is the person who own the land/farm, and a 'bruker' as the perosn who use the land for the 'oppsitter' and a 'dreng' is the persom who is working for the 'bruker' and help him to use the land often under quit poor conditions.

I checked two norwegian dictionaries, oppsitter and bruker both mean the same: The man who use the land.

It must not be taken for granted that the oppsidder owned the farm, although he sometimes did. A dreng is a servant.
