I am searching for a HALVOR HALVORSEN born abt: 1804 in Bø, possibly on or near Oterholt farm. Halvor possibly worked at a timbermill in Skein, and left Telemark & made his way to Vikedal, Rogaland where he met/married: Siri/Sigrid HALVORSDATTER of Imsland Prgj, Vikedal, Rogaland. on 28 November 1839 (Per IGI extracted record) Siri was christened 15 November 1812, and her parent's were: Halvor Olsen & Marthe Torbjørnsdatter. Halvor and Siri settled on the Benkene farm after they were married, and eventually moved to Kråkedal nearby. They had and raised children from this area. I have good documentation on the children, and on Siri/Sigrid....My problem continues to be finding Halvor in Bø, his birth year, his parents, and maybe with luck...his grandparents. Bø Bygdebøker does mention Halvor, but gives no information on his parents. I do not speak/read Norwegian, so if anyone out there can assist me in English, or better translate the wording in the Bø bygdebøker...I'd really appreciate it. Stacey

A possible candidate for Halvor? It's not from the churchbook so it must be checked. But the mother of this Halvor is called Boel as Halvor's first daughter and the birth year corresponds too: Lenke

Hi everyone! Thank you for all the possibilities..The Boel for a mother to Halvor intrigues me because he names a daughter Boel, then again, parents of Liv do too...she names a son Kitil...IF I have the right Halvor to begin with! Kari? where did you find a birthdate of December 1803 for Halvor? The only IGI I was able to pull up for Telemark that was close was for a Halvor born February 1803? Just curious. Thanks for all the help everyone! Any thoughts/ideas/corrections/clues are most welcome! Stacey

Funny thing is that his mother is a Kittilsdtr too! LenkeBut I saw there were over 80 men with Kittel as a first name in Telemark.I hope someone with the bygdebooks from the region will be able to help you.

Hi Stacey! The birth of Halvor in Dec.1803 is taken from the Bø churchbook. The IGI has only a few churchbooks from Norway, and it seems Bø is not there,at least not the years around 1800. We found Halvor in 1865,then he was 61 years old, born in Bø,and you mentioned Oterholt. The only candidate I could find in the churchbook, was the one mentioned.Regards,Kari

Here's a brief (not really) rundown so that all of you wonderful people who have been trying so hard to help, are all on the same 'page' of my own semi-understanding. Starting with my emigrant great grandfather: Halvor #1 (Halvard Halvardson/Halvor Halvorsen) born: 10 February 1840 (Finnøy bygdebøker says 1838) in Imsland parish, Vikedal. Lived on farm: Kråkedal when born. Later moved to Finnøy, and settled on farm: Vestbø and married: Abigael Andersdtr, born: 20 February 1842Halvor #1's parents: Halvor Halvorsen (#2) born: abt. 1803-12 (Kari who has been trying so hard to help me, has found a date of: December 1803, I have also seen an IGI for Seljord..close by? for February 1803) A cousin recently discovered by me on accident through these message boards, and who is Norwegian & done her own research on the family, has maintained that Halvor was from Oterholt, Bø, Telemark. I do not remember if she has told me where she got this information, but it's what area I've been researching under/working with. Another person looked closer in Vikedal, and Halvor #2 is only referenced as having 'been from Bø.' It is also mentioned that he may have worked at a timbermill as seen in my original post. Halvor #2 married: 28 November 1839 In Imsland/Vikedal. He's from 'Bø' Telemark. His wife, and Halvor #1's mother: Siri/Sigrid Halvorsdr (from/christened in Finnøy) 15 November 1812 The union/marriage is documented in Vikedal, and their son, Halvor #1. (Vikedal,Finnøy,and the USA) IF the (#2) Halvor found born 1803 in Oterholt, IS the correct Halvor...I'm in luck because there seems to be a tremdous amount of information on him and his ancestors there in Bø. My main problem that I am chewing on like a bone...is that while I know that many of these records (especially the ones I have access to like the LDS/IGI records, may have lots of inaccuarcies, I cannot locate the Halvor Kari found from December 1803, and I also find it kind of strange that Halvor isn't listed with his family/parent's entry as leaving Bø for Vikedal in the Bø bygdebøk. (anyone else run in to this problem? have suggestions on why this may be so?) When I type in (#2) Halvor's suspected parents: Halvor and Liv...I get nothing. No siblings, nothing. If I look under Halvor in 1803, I find a Halvor Halvorsen born 28 February 1803 in Seljord, Telemark...this record shows parents of: Halvor Olsen & Anne Kitilsdr!!!! Should I be trying to look closer at a bygdebøk for Seljord? 'just in case'?? So yes, I'm very confused. The more clue's I get, the more your kind folk's finding's & help, allow's me to sort things out...Sometimes it's right in front of your face...but you need an objective third eye. I will try and confirm the source of information regarding Oterholt from my cousin in Stavanger, (she's been very nice/helpful) and get back to you all here. If I'm missing something, or not looking closely enough....please let me know! YOU GUY'S ARE GREAT!!! Stacey

Hello! To explain this:Bø bygdebok:Oterholt stops in the book about 1800.Halvor is born 3 years later,it's only his parent and their children born before 1800 mentioned.VRI;the churchbook from Bø starts here in 1815.You will find nothing about Bø before 1815 here.Kari

I'd like to thank all of you for taking the time to read my postings and helping me. Since I last posted, I have been able to confirm Halvor's place of birth/family through my Norwegian 'cousin' and a couple of new Norwegian friends I've made on message boards like this. Also referenced in Halvor's marriage record, so this all looks good. The quest continue's for my other Norwegian Branches! :) Thanks again! Stacey
