To Whom It May Concern:I am trying to find information about my great-grandfather. Unfortunately our family does not have much data or documents. We know only the following:- His name was Edvard Hendrik Sørensen.- He died in Brazil in the city of Porto Alegre in January 17, 1881 at the age of 56. He was born some time in between 1824 or 1825 but we do not know in which city.- From the birth certificate of his son, Carlos Sørensen, who was born in Brazil, we learnt that the parents of Edvard were Ernest and Julia (Guri) Sørensen of Norway.- It is possible that Edvard had a brother by the name of Mathias Sørensen who may have emigrated to the USA sometime prior to 1872.As we do not speak Norwegian, it is extremely difficult to search for information in Norway. I would greatly appreciate it if anybody at this Forum would be able to give me directions as to where or how to orient my search to find out my grandfather’s place of birth and his ancestry. Or if perhaps, among all the Sørensen living in Norway someone is connected with my great-grandfather.Thank you for your co-operation and assistance. Marta

Hello Marta, this is not easy. There is a Norwegian census in 1801 - too early for Edvard, and most likely too early for his parents to have married, and the next one was in 1865, when Edvard was about 40 years old and probably had left Norway. I have looked for a couple named Ernst or something like that, and Guri in the 1865, without success. As you maybe know, the -sen name in those days would tell you the name of a person's father; Edvard Sørensen should be son of a man named Søren. But as you can tell that his father's first name was Ernest, it might have been HIS father who was a Søren. Anyway, there is no reason to believe that any of the Sørensons living in Norway today are related to you.To make it even more complicated: Maybe Ernest's name wasn't Ernest (who is not a common name in Norway) but Ar(e)nt or something like that. But keep waiting, maybe someone by chance know these names?
