Can someone help me to find out the names of Johanna's parents and siblings? I am also looking for the names of their children some of which also came to America. The names I have are; Johanna Pederson B:May 21,1830, on December 3,1848 she married Halvor Bessen( he died Feb 29,1908) . They had 10 children. The two oldest daughters stayed in Norway and I only have names of five of those who came across with them (Hemming, Peter, Mali, Marit, John). Johanna and her husband immigrated about 1880. Some of their children immigrated before them.Johanna lived to be more then 100 years old and there was a nice article printed in the Mohall North Dakota paper about her.

Children: daughter Sigrid (9), son Johan (5) and foster daughter Hanna M. Severins. (3). The family was bound for “Osakis Minn” and went with the steam ship “Hero”. Thank you for your help.(2)Marit, b. 1850, m. to Anders Madsen, a child, BeretMaria, m. to Lars Pettersen Kvernmoen. The family moved to Sweden..This Marit--- was she daughter to Johanna or Beret?(3)Marit, b. 1854, her child Hanna Maria b. 1878 with Severin Olsen. and her child Marta Julianna with John Hanssen Blæstervold (Stordalsvold ) b. 1864. they moved to U.S.A.This Marit's daughter Hanna must have been the 3 year old that was with Halvor and Johanna on the trip. Were Marit and her husband and other child also on the same ship?Below is a section of the article that was in the newspaper for Mohall North Dakota in I believe May of 1930 since Johanna was to celebrate her 100th birthday. It makes me wonder if another daughter had come with them. I know that Mali also came to America since she married Eric Pederssen BRENDMOE but they married July 29, 1881 in Gordon Township, Todd county, Minnesota. She must have came over with her brother or something. John and Hemming were, I think the sons that were already in America.--------------------------------------------------After a long uncomfortable ocean trip contrasting sharply with the one so many of their countrymen are making back to the homeland on great ocean liners this summer for a mighty celebration at Trondjem, with little money and a sick grandchild, so that Mrs. Bessen, her two daughters, and the child were detained for three weeks before being permitted to enter. The child had contracted some desease on board ship as was not uncommon, and by the time they were given leave to come on, they had not a nickel left so that all the food they had on their long trip to Osakis, Minn., was given them by strangers kindly enough to inquire their needs. The father had been allowed to come in and join his sons at once so the three women and child came on under more unfavorable conditions by far than they had anticipated and she often said she did not know how they ever got there.--------------------------------------------Thank you again for your time and help! Susan

Hi Susan!First of all, I am a unknown around the Meråker region, I have been many times in U.S.A. but never in Meråker. Last year I was doing a search; for a family in Minnesota and have possibility to do search in the church register for the period 1845 – 1892 and in the new bygdebook published 1991 – 2004.Ogden, Utah, have to be a little hour by car from Salt Lake City.As an answer on your questions, I have to check all children’s birth, that seems to be some misunderstanding around the namesThis task will take a lot of time.I can otherwise see, you have a lot of relationship backwards in Meråker. Kjell, I really appreaciate all that you have done for me. I hope that you didn't think that I was questioning your ability or anything.I think that maybe the article didn't have all true facts as I have noticed this from time to time and also as people get older they remember things a bit differently.I have found pictures of Johan and one of Peder and his wife and children. I wonder if there is someplace I could contribute them in case anyone in Norway is interested.I think that Mali came to America in 1880 or 1881. Halvor and Hemming maybe then to or earlier since the tickets were from America.Salt Lake City is close and purchasing the books would be a wondeful thing for me as I do have a lot of connection to the Meraker area. I also have connection to the Hjartdal, Telemark area but finanical difficulties leave me to the use of my computer at this time. At the present I am also raising 4 of my grandchildren one of which is special needs so I don't get out much. Please forgive me if I seemed ungrateful in my previous entry. I didn't mean to.Thanks again. Have a wonderful day/night. Susan

Kjell, I hope that this comes to the list. I have had to route my entries through the help of Yngve Nedrebø's office. (fingers crossed) You are very kind. The information about Beret marrying Ole Ellingson is very interesting. I have pictures of an Ellingson and now I can see where this comes in.My cousin Lydia, who is now abt. 74 years old, might remember more about the name with this new help. She has an old photo album, that she let another cousin and I scan, which has 50 pictures in and then there are several seperate pictures. This is so wonderful. (I wonder if the name Gjemese is also Norwegian. There are three photos with this name on)Thank you, I know you will be blessed. Susan (armndcvr@cs.com)

This is very good. I wonder if Marit went to Pennsylvania to marry someone or if there was another family member there. I will see if I can find them there. I wish that the 1890 census had not been messed up so we can't get much of it.I know that the information you have found is better and more correct. Is there any marriage date for Peder and Marta? Were they married in Norway or the America? In the 1920 census I found them but the dates are all messed up. I guess it depends on who gives the info to the census taker. Here is what the census says. they were married when Peder was 19 and Anna M.(which is probably for Marta)was 16. Immigration year for Peder was 1880 and for Anna M. 1876, which can't be right unless she returned to Norway and then came back. Maybe Peder came over in 1876. 1920 Children are Otto, Paul M., Violet E., Walter O. in 1930 they have a grandson (?*ilton) E.Stuves?, and granddaughter Dora G. Peterson.I really appreciate what you are doing. All of this is so valueable to the family. Thank you again for your time and help. Susan
