Ron, Did this Svennung also have a son Svennung? Maybe I am not thinking correct. If he were 21 in 1892 would his birth be around 1870 or 1871? 'Svennung Svennungsen b.6 July 1843 Sauer,STRAND Parents Svennung Johansen & Mari Halvorsen Married Gunhild Olsdatter 4 May 1869 Heddal.'

I did some hunting on ancestry.com last night and found Ole with his wife and children and a brother John was living with them. He may have just visited at the time of the census. So far I haven't found Mari. She may have married before the census. I am finding this to be fascinating. Are there any digitalized records of people returning to Norway that might be checked for Sveinung returning to his home land?Sue

I have one last question. I understand that maybe there is not a record of people returning to Norway but are there any records that are after 1924 that may list Sveinung Sveinungsen Strand in a census or parish reocrd or something? I am not familiar with the census regulations you have as to the availability of more recent years. Thanks Susan

In those days people often hid such facts as somebody having any kind of mental difficulties or illnesses or being incarcerated. Suicide attempts were in many places for a long time, perhaps still in the 1920'ies, seen and punished as crimes and not regarded as the signs of severe illness. In my opinion it would not be strange if the poor man had difficulties after witnessing his wife's death in such a horrible accident! In case he returned to the USA without his daughter knowing or the possibility that he never left: Have you checked any later US censuses plus, most important, who is buried in West Prairie Cemetery, Winnebago county, Iowa, as Svenning S. Strand 1870-1953? Also an Alma 1906-1961 (daughter?), a Tone H 1881-1913 and an unreadable are listed. I found the listing at Rootsweb, Lenke If that person can be safely excluded as being 'your' Sveinung: If Sveinung returned to and stayed in Norway he certainly has left some tracks in the records, if nothing else his burial... Possibly a probate after his (probable)father Sveinung Sveinungsen Gulmundsrud or his mother might list the heirs' addresses. My guess is that Statsarkivet in Kongsberg might have these. He might be buried in the same cemetary as his parens. The Norwegian 1900-census lists the probable couple of parents as living on Gulmundsrud, Hitterdal, Telemark.

Vibeke & Gøran Åhling, Thank you for your help. I am sure that this is the Sven Strand I am looking for. I don't know why I didn't look for the cememtery records for West Prairie Church. I knew that there was a family connection to that church but never put the two together when it came to Svenung Strand. The Tone Strand listed here is his wife. I am sure that you are right about the way it must have affected poor Sven seeing his beloved wife die in such a horrible way. He very possibly had post traumatic stress disorder and flash backs. I will have to do some other searching. Maybe he never did go back to Norway. There should be a paper trail somewhere.I am thinking that maybe when his girls got older they or one of them may have been so much like their mother that he couldn't handle it any more.It is also possible he could have been hospitalized OR even had found another lady in his life that didn't want anything to do with his children. This should be really interesting.I mostly found it to be strang that he would stay with his children for so long and then just leave.Thank you for your help and the new ideas. I have some ideas of where to look now and see if I can find anything else. There should be a census report some where or something. I can't wait till the 1940 census becomes available in a few years. For now census wise 1930 is the latest that I have that I can look at. Have a wonderful day! :-) Sue
