John Harlan RotnessJohn Harlan Rotness, 82, of Chadron, died Wednesday, September 23 at Chadron Community Hospital.Funeral services were Sept. 28 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Chadron with Reverend Sylvia High Karlsson officiating. Interment was at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Chadron.Harlan was born February 3, 1927 in Polk County, Minn. to John and Ida (Hanson) Rotness. He grew up on the family farm east of Fosston, Minn. He attended the Kings Lutheran Church and was confirmed in 1941. He was educated in the Pine Hills School and Fosston Public School.Harlan worked as a mechanic in the Fosston area before entering military service in 1945. He served in the Pacific Theatre in Okinawa, Japan and was discharged in 1947.Harlan attended Dunwoody Technical Institute before returning to his hometown where he married Ellen Patricia Brothen, on April 4, 1956.Harlan worked as an auto mechanic before moving his family to Chadron in 1972 where he worked as auto technician and air conditioning specialist at Reids and later went to work for Solar Motors. He retired after turning wrenches for 45 years.Harlan learned the enjoyment of fishing while growing up in Minnesota, spending time with family and friends. He was very active in the Chadron VFW, Post 1375, and was post commander for several years.Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Ellen; eight children, Katie Baril of Detroit Lakes, Minn.; David and Barb of Helena, Mont.; Michael and Mary of Alliance, ; John and Linda of Hay Springs; Leslie and Sandy of Kennewick, Wash.; Marilyn Caparoon and Scott Diehl of Chadron; Marvel of Lake Stevens, Wash.; and Marvin and Renee of Lake Stevens, Wash.; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren;five sisters, Delores Dyrdahl, Idella Olson, Helen Rotness, and Geraldine and Ralph Hove, all of Fosston, Minn., and Jean and Les Jacobsen of Dillworth, Minn..
