I found this link to Bredvold

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-tl20080505630704.jpg

but don't know where the relevant information is can you please enlighten __

The page is part of an index to Senja real estate register no. 13 and 17. It says that Bredvold is covered by pages 44-47 in volume 1, which must be identical to Senja real estate register no. 13. Indeed, Bredvold is covered by pages 44-47 in this register, starting here.

I was really amazed to find no mention of Hans Olai Mikkelsen or his family at Breivoll despite the fact they remained for several generations is it possible pages are missing ?? the dearth of information is odd.

The 1910 census shows that Hans Olai Mikkelsen was living at Breivold, farm number 85/11.

The corresponding page in the real estate record is this one and the next one. It shows that Hans Olai Mikkelsen first came to own a part of Breivold in 1855.

Does that mean Hans Olai had no land at Breivoll prior to that ?? He should have inherited something from his father??

I suppose that his father was the Mikkel Rask (Rasck) who is mentioned in the records. It seems that his probate was completed at February 13th 1847, and that his land at Breivold was transferred to his son Johan Rasck for 130 speciedaler (the Norwegian currency at the time). Of the 130 speciedaler, Hans Olai Mikkelsen (Rask) should receive close to 15 speciedaler for his inheritance.

I will return to this later.

That's very interesting did Johan transfer his inheritance to his brother when he died in 1852?? I've seen Mikkel's will it looks illegible

First of all, it's not really a will. It's a probate, meaning that Mikkel's belongings were used to pay his debts, and then the rest was shared between his widow and children according to the law. It doesn't seem as Mikkel had left a will.

It seems to me that Breivold about 1840 was divided into four farms or properties, each counting for 1/4 of Breivold. Mikkel Rask was the inhabitant of one of these four farms, the one with no. 7 in the matricul of 1838. However, he didn't own this farm by himself. He actually owned no more than 2/5 of it. 2/5 was owned by Hans Jonsen, who had inherited it from his father back in 1810, and 1/5 was owned by a businessman or merchant N. Dons, who had bought it from a certain M. Kildahl in 1840.

Now, when Mikkel Rask died, his 2/5 of Breivold no. 7 was valued at 130 speciedaler. It was obviously decided that this part should be transferred to Johan Rask, but as Johan's inheritance was no more than a scarce 15 speciedaler, he had to pay the other persons who had rights to the part, i.e. Mikkel Rask's widow Anne Katrine Kristensdatter (52 speciedaler), his brother Hans Olai (a scarce 15 speciedaler), his two sisters Anne Kirstine and Maren Anne (a scarce 15 speciedaler combined), and finally a merchant Mellker (33 speciedaler), to whom Mikkel Rask obviously had owned some money.

In 1850, Hans Olai Mikkelsen bought Hans Jonsen's part and half of N. Dons' part, which made Hans Olai the owner of half of Breivold no. 7. Dons kept 1/10, and Johan Rask was still the owner of 2/5.

In 1851 Johan Rask sold his 2/5 to merchant Dons, meaning that Hans Olai Mikkelsen and merchant Dons each owned half of Breivold no. 7.

In 1855 Breivold no. 7 was formally divided into two farms. Hans Olai Mikkelsen's half was labeled Breivold no. 7b, and he did himself inhabit this farm. Merchant Dons' half was labeled Breivold no. 7a, and it was inhabited by a widow named Johanna Rasmusdatter.

In 1859, merchant Dons sold Breivold no. 7a to Hans Olai Mikkelsen, and no. 7a and no. 7b were once again merged to one farm (no. 7) with Hans Olai Mikkelsen as the sole owner. It was a part of the deal that he had to take care of Johanna Rasmusdatter.

Everything is extracted from the two records linked in previous posts, except a little bit from the 1838-matricul.

I have not investigated Parten, which is farm no. 8 (154) in the 1838-matricul.

Hans Olai Mikkelsen is never listed as owner of Parten, according to this record. It belonged to The Nordland church- and school-fund until 1849, when it was sold to Anne Kirstine Kristensdatter. At the end of 1849, she sold Parten to bailiff Schjølberg, whose widow transferred it to her son-in-law, bailiff P.A.B. Opsiøn, in 1886. Parten was then valued at 1200 kroner, and only 14 days later, bailiff Opsiøn sold Parten for 1500 kroner to Mikkel Johan Rask Hansen.

Mikkel Johan Rask Hansen kept Parten until 1925, when he sold one part to his son Hans Olai and the other part to his daughter Henny.

You have my jaw dropping again   One thing that surprised me was then when Breivoll was sold in 1905 there appeared to be need for some further transaction/legal work in 1907. The brother's Jens,Martin and Mikkel all seem to be party to it. I will try to send you a link so you don't have to search through. Can you comment on this/say what was actually going on in 1905 then 1907??

Bottom right at page 839 is a reference to the division of Hans Olai Mikkelsen's property Breivold, now labeled property no. 85/11, into three properties. The division took place October 5th 1905, but wasn't recorded at court until October 7th 1907. The three properties were:

  • Property no. 85/11, 160/223 of the original property, keeping the name Breivold. Hans Olai Mikkelsen sold this property to his son Jens P. Mikkelsen July 24th 1905 (the sale was recorded at court October 7th 1907) for 4500 kroner.
  • Property no. 85/21, 33/223 of the original property, named Hansvold. Hans Olai Mikkelsen sold this property to his son Mikkel Hansen Parten November 17th 1906 (the sale was recorded at court February 9th 1925) for 500 kroner.
  • Property no. 85/22, 30/223 of the original property, named Langestøkke (also spelled Langestykket). Hans Olai Mikkelsen sold this property to Martin Hansen Breivoll November 17th 1906 (the sale was recorded at court September 13th 1909) for 1200 kroner.

All sales included a clause that secured Hans Olai Mikkelsen and his wife certain yields for lifetime.

Another good answer !!  I am wondering if there is probate for Hans Olai in 1915 when he died what happened to his estate he had 9 surviving children would they each have had a claim on his estate??

Also there is one brother missing from the above list this is Magnus the youngest brother b.1874. I can't find any record of his having any financial dealings registered by the judge at all is that true?? Have I missed something??

Best Regards,

Rob.

I guess there would be no public probate when Hans Olai died, but rather a private probate, as his children were adults. Law changes during the 19th century allowed most people to carry out probates privately.

Anyway, as Hans Olai apparently sold all his estates in 1905 and 1906, the children had no estates to claim when he died.

If Magnus didn't own anything in Breivoll, he wouldn't be mentioned on the Breivoll-pages. Maybe he bought himself an estate somewhere else, then he would be mentioned there.

There is a possibility as Magnus Hansen on Storskog the birthday is almost right ,within one year, as per 1900 census. I can't find the mortgage record after 1890 for Storskog can you please advise where the list is??. I don't know how to find records beyond 1890 in the gazateer. Thankyou for helping to navigate so many pages.

Also ,Is it possible to ask about the entry 1891 census for Breivold ?? Will someone look this up??

Best Regards,

Rob.

He is indeed listed in the property register, farm no. 83 part 17, which is the same property or estate where he is listed in the 1900 census.

It says that the estate was sold from widow Nathalie Kristine Johannesdatter to her son Magnus Nicolai Eberg Hansen in September 1895.

Magnus appears to be the son of Hans Natanael Olsen and wife Natalie Kristine Johannesdatter at Skog.

Hi Kristian

Thanks for sorting that out!! I didn't realise that Lykken was part of Storskog - Is there a map that shows the farms from that time ??I don't want to waste your time, a map would be useful.

Thankyou,

You can use a service from Statens kartverk (Norwegian map authority). If you use the zoom in-function a sufficient number of times, borderlines between estates will appear, and estate numbers will appear in red. You should look for 83/17 in the area close to Risnakken, just south of Breivoll. Unfortunately, there seems be no way to provide a link to a close up view. Looking on the map, I assume that 83/42, 83/44 and 83/80 are former parts of 83/17.
