Maren Margrethe Edwardsdatter

I don't know how to delete this post huh.gif -- and I apologize for that. But I found the answer to my question -- so ignore this!

I am searching for the birth of my 3rdg-grandmother, Maren Margrethe Evertsdtr/Edwardsdtr. She married Gregorius Larsen on 20 Apr 1815 in Stavanger. See Min lenke

According to the parish register, she was 42 when she died on 23 Mar 1836. That puts her birth year at about 1794. I searched the 1801 census (Stavanger Amt only) for any girl named either Maren or Margrethe with a father named either Evert or Edward, who was born between 1790-1800. I found only one -- Maren Ewertsdtr, age 2, d/o Endre Ewertsen and Ingeborg Svensdtr, in Stavanger at Øvre Strandgaden, no. 402.

I found this girl's baptism on 14 Jun 1799 in Domkirken/Stavanger. See (#61): Min lenke

Although her father is named Endre Ewertsen in the 1801 census, in the parish registers, he is called Endre Edwardsen. Also, in her baptism record, she has only one given name, Maren -- not Maren Margrethe. This seems to be a match, except for the missing "Margrethe". Can someone tell me if it is possible that her baptism record would not show her full name? Or -- is it possible she got the second name later?

Also, isn't it unusual, at this time (1801), for the children to take their father's surname, rather than using the usual patronymic naming pattern? I guess it doesn't really matter, but I'm curious...

One other piece of evidence -- the godmother of Gregorius Larsen and Maren Margrethe Edwardsdtr's first child, Birgitte, baptized 19 Aug 1817, is shown as Martha Jacobsdtr. Endre Edwardsen/Ewertsen's father was Edward Rasmussen. Martha Jacobsdtr was the name of his second wife, whom he married in 1791.

I would appreciate any help or advice.

Hilsen

Patti

I think you found the wrong Maren since she would be too young to get married i 1815 - still not 16

Hei Grete

After I wrote that post, I took another look and found Maren Margrethe Edwardsdtr, døpte 29 Sep 1793, d/o Edward Rasmussen & Martha Jacobsdtr. She is related to the first Maren I wrote about, but the name and age are just right. Actually, she is the half-sister of Endre Edwardsen (the younger Maren's father).

I appreciate the feedback...

Have you found this family in the 1801 census?

They are at Sølberg Gaden, No. 197 in Stavanger. Maren (age 7) is living with her mother, Marthe Jacobsdtr (widow, age 50). Also living there is Marthe's step-son, Rasmus Evertsen/Edwardsen (age 18). I have been searching for the burial record of Edward Rasmussen between 1792-1801, but so far I can't find it.

He may be the son of Rasmus Gulæksen and Guri Ivarsdatter, dpt 26 Oct 1749, see Min lenke

The age seems to fit, and he did name his first daughter Guri. But I can't confirm that this is "my" Edward yet. Knowing his age when he died would help. I will keep looking.

That's what I too found in 1801. BUT: Maren is listed as Andersdatter (which may be wrong - but makes me wonder). Have you found the step-son Rasmus baptized?

In spite of Maren's surname, which I agree is an error, I feel pretty sure this is the right person. Here is Rasmus's baptism: Min lenke

Now that I look at this baptism again, I see that Rasmus Gulæksen is mentioned, although I can't make out the context. This helps confirm that the Edward Rasmussen (born 1749) is probably right. I should go back and look at the other children Edward had with his first wife, Maren Endresdtr. There may be more clues...

The facts you've found clearly establish the connection.

Have you found Marthe and Edward listed as married prior to 1794?

If she was from Stavanger, they would've married there.

If she was living in one of the surrounding parishes, it shouldn't be difficult to find them.

Here is their betrothal: Min lenke

Their marriage is on the next page (14 Jul 1791). I know couples usually marry in the bride's home parish, but I have not been able to find her birth in Stavanger.

Here are the names that appear on Maren Margrethe Edwardsdtr's baptism:

Elisabeth, wife of R. Giellebøls (in 1801, probably Marie Elisabeth Stahl, wife of Rejer Giellebølle, f ca 1754)

Oluf Andreas Løwold (in 1801, Byefoged og byeskriver, f. ca 1747)

Hans Gabriel Bucholm Sundt (in 1801, Kiøbmand, f. ca 1768)

Martha Georgina Ohnsorg (in 1801, wife of Jens Svendsen Berg; d/o Børge Ohnsorg & Dorothea Catharina Kønig, f 1774)

Anna Augusta Smith (in 1801, wife of Johan Hag; d/o Anders Smidt & Anna Margareta Kras, f 1772)

I thought there might be some clues to Marthe's origins here, but so far, it seems to be a big dead end.

Any ideas??
