In the Parish register for Asker , Akershus births 1790 - left column - page 108, it shows a birth of GULBRAND. There appear to be several notes that I cannot decipher. I see the name Axel Gulbrandsen in the notes . Can anyone help to translate what the pastor has written? I would like to know the name of the parents and date of birth of Gulbrand. From the IGI Index, I found the birth of an Axel Gulbrandsen, born 01 March 1761 Asker, Akershus. He could be the father?? Thank you for any help.

A bit hard to read, but the mother is Magrete Olsdatter. The child was born outside of wedlock, and the father is listed last in the entry after the witnesses and is, as you correctly assume, Axel Gulbrandsen. The child was born 19 May 1790 and baptized 23 May 1790 (the baptismal date is the same as the entry directly above).

By the way here is the link to the page in question: Akershus fylke, Asker, Ministerialbok nr. I 3 (1767-1807), Fødte og døpte 1790, side 108.

I'll try the sponsors: Berte Thoresd. Solstad, Birte Andersd. ib. (Solstad), Gu?nil Olsd. Solstad, Anders Ols. Solstad, Xtopher Anders. Berger,

and Axel Gulbrandsen was a soldier under Major Staffelt's Jæger Comp(any) in Fredrikstad.

I've tried to google Major Staffeldt and find him mentioned in 'Norske Jægerkorps historie 1788-1888' but it seems to be impossible to get access to the book at the National library: NB.no.

From what I found on Google, I think Major Staffeldt's company was in Tønsberg, (Vestfold) in 1788:

'Saavel denne som Binzer var den 15de august 1788 udnævnte til sine ... infanteri kompani om

uopholdelig at marschere til Tønsberg, hvor major Staffeldt indtil ....'

Thank you both. I grew up in Norwegian Grove Township but they only taught us to count to 10; meanwhile the neighbors sat and talked Norwegian and drank coffee at our house. We follow Norwegian traditons, however, with the 17th of May celebration at our church and lutefisk and lefse and meatballs at another church every fall. My son and dtr.-in-law spent her 40th birthday which is May 17th in Oslo and loved every minute of their trip. They are ready to go back.
